Seetha (Devayani) is a possessive wife who suspects that all the women in the world are throwing themselves at her husband, Jayaram (Ajith Kumar). Things get a little interesting only after Meera (Heera) enters the picture and ends up hugging Jayaram right in front of Seetha's eyes. Seetha is diagnosed with a deadly heart condition and decides to have Jayaram and Meera to tie the knot for the sake of a good life for her young son. She even goes as far as getting a divorce from Jayaram to make him hate her. In the end, Seetha dies while giving birth to a female child and Jayaram and Meena gets married by naming the baby as Seetha.

Murali (Jagapati Babu) an orphan who carves to have family relations. Murali a professional violinist follows in love with a playback singer Shalini (Heera Rajagopal) and goes around expressing his love for her. But when she insults his love, he promises he wouldn't trouble her again and that one day, she would understand him and come to him. One day Murali meets his childhood friend Maha / Mahalakshmi (Kausalya), who has recently lost her lover Madhu (Abbas) in an accident. To force her father to accept her love, she had already told him that she was married. Circumstances force her uncle to think Murali is her husband and they go back to her house in the village. But Maha's father Raghava Rao (Nassar) is so much angry on their marriage and does not accept Murali as his son-in-law.

Finally husband realizes the importance, sanctity of the marriage and apologizes to the wife and requests her to be his wife again.

Bheema Raju (Jaya Prakash Reddy) a mafia don, kills his henchman Rajeswara Rao (Chalapathi Rao). Raana (Nandamuri Balakrishna) son of Rajeswara Rao kills Bheema Raju and becomes a mafia don himself. Bheem Raju's son Devaraj (Charan Raj) try to kill Raana in many ways, but nothing works out. Raana kills a Municipal Commissioner (Raghunath Reddy) for raping a girl. Dr. Kasthuri (Bhagyasri) who is a doctor and also an ally of the bad guys does the postmortem of the body and tells the police about the murder and tries to send Raana to jail. Raana kidnaps Kasthuri and threatens her and while he is killing her Shankaram Master (Chandra Mohan) obstructs his way begs him to leave his daughter, then suddenly Raana finds out that Kasthuri is none other than his long-lost sister. But he not able to express the truth, because he has given a promise to his adopted father Rajeswara Rao that he never till his wife Parvathi (Annapurna) that he is their adopted son. Devaraj uses the situation, develops more and more enmity between Kasthuri & Raana and desperately tries to kill Raana using Kasthuri. But she comes to know that Raana is her brother towards the end of the film.

Ranganathan (Sudhir Ahuja), a middle aged engineer who lives in a middle class home in Madras with his wife Kamala (Sushma) and daughter Kokila (Heera Rajgopal), who is a medical student. Manga (Revathy) a maid lives with them and is treated like a member of the family. As Ranganathan travels a lot and his wife is not well, the family decides to keep a paying guest. Sathyamoorthy a bank executive (Arvind Ramesh) comes to live in the Ranganathan household. Kokila and Sathyamoorthy fall in love and plan to get married with her parents consent. Meanwhile one night perchance Sathya and the maid Manga are alone in the house. One thing leads to another and before they realise they end up making love. Kokila remains unaware of this incident even as Manga knows about Kokila's affair with Sathya. Sathya soon forgets the Manga episode and continues his romance with Kokila. One day while Kokila is away on a college tour Satya is informed by Manga that she is pregnant and hopes he will not let her down. Sathya suggests that Manga abort the child. Manga is shattered and leaves the Ranganathan house. Kokila comes back from the college tour and finds Sathya missing. He has vacated the room, says her mother and all attempts by Kokila to trace him remain futile. Kokila and Sathya meet each other accidentally, after few years in a village where she has gone as a doctor. She discovers Satya has married Manga and they have a young daughter whom they have named Kokila.

The film starts in a courtroom where a Brahmin woman Janaki (Meena) is fighting for divorce from her husband Pandian (Kamal Haasan). She offers various reasons for wanting a divorce. She has married Pandian against the wishes of her rich father Vishwanathan Iyer (Gemini Ganesan). But she isn't able to come to terms with living in Pandian's small house without amenities. Pandian is an assistant dance director with a modest income and is not able to spend much time with the family. All this accumulates and Janaki decides to apply for divorce, which is granted. The court orders that Pandian can meet his daughter Barathi, once a week and this is his only solace. His daughter, however, loves him a lot and doesn't like the arrangement.
