Houseley Stevenson (parfois crédité Houseley Stevens), né le 30 juillet 1879 à Londres (Angleterre) et mort le 6 août 1953 à Duarte (Californie), est un acteur américain d'origine anglaise.

Biography

Ayant quitté son Angleterre natale pour s'installer définitivement aux États-Unis (dont il obtient la citoyenneté), Houseley Stevenson contribue ainsi au cinéma à soixante-six films américains sortis entre 1936 et 1952.

Un de ses rôles les plus connus est celui du chirurgien esthétique opérant Humphrey Bogart dans Les Passagers de la nuit de Delmer Daves (1947). Mentionnons également Jeanne d'Arc de Victor Fleming (1948, avec Ingrid Bergman dans le rôle-titre), ainsi que les westerns La Fille du désert de Raoul Walsh (1949, avec Joel McCrea et Virginia Mayo) et Au pays de la peur d'Andrew Marton (son avant-dernier film, 1952, avec Stewart Granger et Cyd Charisse).

À la télévision américaine, il apparaît dans huit séries de 1948 à 1954 (diffusion après sa mort survenue en 1953, à 74 ans), dont Les Aventures de Superman (un épisode, 1952).

Au théâtre enfin, Houseley Stevenson joue notamment à Broadway (New York) dans cinq pièces entre 1938 et 1940, dont On the Rocks de George Bernard Shaw (1938, avec Joseph Anthony et Philip Bourneuf) et The Time of Your Life de William Saroyan (1939-1940, avec William Bendix, Celeste Holm et Gene Kelly).

De son mariage sont nés trois enfants, dont l'acteur Onslow Stevens (1902-1977).

When printer John R. Hodges (Monty Woolley) is forced to retire at age 65 because of a company policy, he decides to do something about it. Dyeing his hair black, he poses as Harold P. Cleveland, the president of his former employer's parent company and goes on an inspection tour of his old workplace, with the firm's nervous, mystified executives in tow. While walking around the plant, Hodges runs into Joe Elliott (David Wayne), the boyfriend of his granddaughter Alice (Jean Peters), and winks at him to let him in on the joke. New York theatrical producer Larry O'Brien (Conte) plans to found a motion picture company in Hollywood. He buys an old studio which was unused since the days of silent movies. There he's shown the office where a famous director was murdered twenty years earlier. Although there were many suspects the case hasn't been solved. The story concerns a young mentally disturbed man, Martin Lynn (Farley Granger), who goes on a rampage after his sick mother dies. A young man in sits in prison on the night before his execution, while his girlfriend waits for the inevitable in the prison governor's house. The governor and his wife sympathize with both of them. It is the first use of the electric chair in the state, and there are teething problems with its installation. Meanwhile a group of reporters discussing the case, realize that the M.O. of the crime bears a similar style to that of a criminal, "Parrot" Farucco, who was supposed to have died three years previously. As the execution takes place off camera, a prison orderly collecting mail in the cafe identifies a customer as Farucco. He confronts him and is shot by the criminal, who is subdued and tied by other customers who happen to be prison officers waiting to begin work.
