Ivars Kalniņš (born 1 August 1948) is a Latvian film and television actor. He graduated in 1974 from the Jāzeps Vītols Theatre Department of the Latvian Conservatory. He had already started acting however in 1972 at the Artistic Academic Theatre of J. Rainis. Kalniņš has performed in both Latvian language and Russian language films and television shows.

Biography

Ivars Kalniņš naît à Riga dans une famille nombreuse. Diplômé du studio populaire d'acteur de cinéma en 1971, il se produit sur scène du Théâtre Dailes depuis 1972. Il obtient son diplôme de la faculté d'art dramatique de l'Académie de musique de Lettonie en 1974 et mène une carrière à succès au théâtre et au cinéma. Il donne notamment la réplique à Vija Artmane dans Théâtre, adapté du roman éponyme de William Somerset Maugham, sous la direction de Jānis Streičs en 1978. En 1981, il tient le rôle principal, celui de Prince Edwin de Liebensdorf, dans l'adaptation télévisée de la Princesse Czardas d'Emmerich Kálmán (1915) de Yan Frid. Après la dislocation de l'URSS, il continue à apparaitre régulièrement dans les productions télévisées russes. En 1997, les spectateurs lettons le revoient dans le rôle principal du mélodrame Likteņdzirnas de Jānis Streičs, inspiré du roman Les Neiges de Jānis Klīdzējs .

L'artiste a été député de la 6e Saeima de 1995 à 1998.

She was the first woman in the country to become a Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It seemed that the whole world was against her accomplishing this feat. In spite of all the obstacles she later got a Ph. D. in mathematics. However she was denied a professorship at any Russian University because of her gender. She had to go to Western Europe for continuation of her career and studies. She had a daughter and family life. Sofya Kovalevskaya was eventually recognized in Russia. Her popularity reaches the heights whilst the band she is performing with remains in the shadows. At an important live concert the band turns off the sound, but Viktoria keeps singing the song, changing the lyrics to "I will sing till the end". As they leave the concert she stops the car and rips posters of herself off the walls of the concert hall and leaves the band for a solo career.
