Biography

Pour le cinéma (où il débute vers la fin des années 1920), Jack Harris est monteur sur quatre-vingt-dix films sortis entre 1930 et 1970, majoritairement britanniques ou en coproduction. Parmi eux figurent plusieurs réalisations de Maurice Elvey (ex. : Meurtres en 1932, avec Ivor Novello et Elizabeth Allan), David Lean (ex. : Brève Rencontre en 1945, avec Celia Johnson et Trevor Howard) ou Ronald Neame (ex. : La Salamandre d'or en 1950, avec Trevor Howard et Anouk Aimée).

An accidental meeting in the United States between an actress and a composer, both French. In the year 1797, the British naval vessel HMS Avenger (changed from the book; in early drafts it was Indomitable, later ones, Bellipotent) press gangs into service a crewman "according to the Rights of War" from the merchant ship The Rights of Man. The new crewman, Billy Budd (Terence Stamp), is considered naive by his shipmates, and they attempt to indoctrinate him in their cynicism. But Budd's steadfast optimism is impenetrable, as when he is asked to critique the horrible gruel the crew must eat, he offers "It's hot. And there's a lot of it. I like everything about it except the flavor." The crew discovers Budd stammers in his speech when under anxiety.
