James (Edward) Barton, né le 1er novembre 1890 à Gloucester City (New Jersey) et mort le 19 février 1962 à Mineola (Long Island, État de New York), est un acteur, chanteur et danseur américain.

Biography

James Barton débute au théâtre, où il s'illustre entre autres dans le répertoire du vaudeville. Il joue notamment à Broadway (New York) entre 1919 et 1957, dans des revues, comédies musicales, opérettes et pièces, dont No Foolin’ (revue produite par Florenz Ziegfeld, 1926, avec Paulette Goddard et Charles King), Le marchand de glace est passé d'Eugene O'Neill (pièce, 1946-1947, avec Jeanne Cagney et Russell Collins), ou encore La Kermesse de l'Ouest (comédie musicale sur une musique de Frederick Loewe, 1951-1952, avec Olga San Juan et James Mitchell).

Au cinéma, il contribue à vingt-trois films américains, le premier (son unique muet) étant Why Women Remarry de John Gorman (1923, avec Milton Sills et Ethel Grey Terry) ; le dernier est Les Désaxés de John Huston (1961, avec Clark Gable et Marilyn Monroe).

Entretemps, mentionnons les westerns Le Retour du proscrit d'Henry Hathaway (1941, avec John Wayne et Betty Field) et La Ville abandonnée de William A. In Reno, Nevada, Roslyn Tabor (Monroe) is a beautiful 30-year-old woman who has just gotten a quickie 6 week divorce from her inattentive husband Raymond (McCarthy). After leaving the Washoe County Courthouse, Roslyn's best local friend, Isabelle Steers, (Ritter) takes her to a bar at Harrah's Reno for drinks to let the reality of her divorce sink in. While there, they meet an aging cowboy named Gaylord 'Gay' Langland (Gable) and his tow truck driver friend Guido (Wallach). They invite Roslyn and Isabelle to Guido's place in the Nevada country to help her forget about the divorce, after Gay tells Roslyn that he is too divorced. They arrive at the un-finished house Guido had built for his wife, who had died several years earlier during childbirth. They drink and dance. Roslyn has too much to drink, so later Gay drives her home to Reno.

Tracy Powell, an Indiana farmer, gets the gold fever and heads for Stockton, California in 1849. There, he abandons his first partner, Bert Killian, and teams up with Sam Wilkins, a claim jumper employed by Willis Haver. Six years later, Powell returns to Indiana and his sweetheart, Julie. They marry and he tries farming again but, on the night their son is born, he takes off again searching for gold. This time he heads for the hills with an inveterate prospector, Jimmo McCann. A decade later, the two are still hunting for their big strike when McCann is killed in an accident. Powell returns home with news of a big strike but the deserted Julie will have nothing to do with him. His friend Killian will not believe him but Haver, now a banker gives him a small loan and then beats him out of his claim. Many years pass before he comes home, now sixty-years-old, and this time, his wife and son open their home to him. But he vows to go prospecting come next spring.

In 1867, a gang led by James "Stretch" Dawson (Gregory Peck) robs a bank and flees into the desert. Out of water, the outlaws come upon a ghost town called Yellow Sky and its only residents, a hostile young woman called "Mike" (Anne Baxter) by her prospector grandfather (played by James Barton). Stretch is attracted to Mike. While the men recover from their ordeal, Dude (Richard Widmark) snoops around. Dude tells the others that the old man is mining gold, but Stretch is unimpressed. The next day, Mike and Grandpa take to the hills. A confrontation between Stretch and Dude over the leadership of the gang is interrupted by Mike shooting at them. However, when Grandpa is hit in the leg by a ricochet, Mike surrenders.
