Jan Budař, alias Pavel Bedura (born 31 July 1977) is a Czech actor, director, singer, composer and script writer.

Biography

Budař was born in Frýdlant, a short distance from the city of Liberec. He graduated from Brno's Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts (JAMU) in 2000. He started his career in Brno's theatres under the tutelage of Vladimír Morávek, one of the most acclaimed Czech theatre directors. This creative partnership culminated in their first film, Boredom in Brno. Budař also co-authored the script and composed the music. The comedy was awarded five Czech Lions in 2003, including Best Male Actor for Jan Budař's performance. This success led to roles in such films as Marek Najbrt's debut Champions and Jan Hřebejk's recent Up and down, the Czech entry for the Academy Awards, which won the top awards at the Czech Lions Awards 2005. The team of Morávek and Budař created their second film, Hrubeš and Mareš best friends: come rain or shine. Having achieved his first life's ambition of acting on screen, he has only two more: playing alongside Audrey Tatou in a film directed by Pedro Almodóvar and touring with his Eliščin Band, "the Band of Shy Elise". Besides acting, writing, composing and singing with his band, Budař also makes his own short films, documentaries and videoclips. In March 2005, Budař won the Czech Lion award for "Best Supporting Actor" in Champions. In February 2005, Budař was sent to Berlin as a shooting star to represent Czech cinemathography at the Berlinale Film Festival 2005.

The film is presented as a true story set during World War II. With the Nazi takeover of Europe underway, the deputy Reichsprotektor Reinhard Heydrich arrives in Prague and his underlings begin enforcing his authority in the towns and villages across the occupied country. In Lidice, the film's main protagonist, František Šíma, is sent to prison following a family dispute that boils over resulting in the accidental death of one of his sons. During Šíma's incarceration one of the other villagers, Václav Fiala, strings along his mistress with lies about his bravery as a resistance fighter against the Germans. Heydrich is assassinated and during the Gestapo investigation that follows, a letter Fiala has written describing his supposed heroism comes to their attention. It leads to the total destruction of Lidice and the mass execution and deportations of its citizens. Throughout the atrocity, Šima remains in jail, where news of what happened is kept from him. On his release, he returns to Lidice where he finds the village has been obliterated and finally learns of the tragic events.

The opening of the film shows us a montage of Adolf Hitler's life from the years 1899-1907. The 10-year old Hitler (Thomas Sangster) is shown to be arrogant and disobedient. He has a stern, ill-tempered father, Alois Hitler (Ian Hogg), and a doting mother, Klara Hitler (Stockard Channing), who indulges his dreams of becoming a great artist. One day, his father dies of a heart attack but the young Hitler shows no empathy or concern. Seven years later, a 17-year old Hitler (Simon Sullivan) applies unsuccessfully to the Vienna Arts Academy but is told he lacks the talent to become an artist. Following his mother’s death, he moves to Vienna permanently but is unable to find work and soon becomes destitute and homeless. Influenced by the city’s prevalent anti-semitism, young Hitler becomes convinced that the Jews and immigrants are to blame for his misfortunes.
