Jan Němec, né le 12 juillet 1936 à Prague (Tchécoslovaquie) et mort dans cette ville le 18 mars 2016 (à 79 ans), est un réalisateur tchèque dont les œuvres les plus importantes datent des années 1960.

L'historien du cinéma Peter Hames l'a décrit comme « l'enfant terrible de la Nouvelle Vague tchécoslovaque ».

Biography

Jan Němec s'exile après la fin du Printemps de Prague et ne retourne en République tchèque qu'après la Révolution de velours. Il réalise alors Dans le feu des ardeurs royales (V záru královské lásky) en 1990.

Il a été le mari d'Ester Krumbachová, aussi scénariste de certains de ses films.

The father escaped the Soviet invasion of Budapest and now runs a Hungarian restaurant that is not doing well financially. The younger of his two sons is gay and struggling with coming out. His dad disowns him when he finally does. The older son is involved in the counterculture, gets kicked out of college, buys a motorcycle, starts dating a Maoist, and is also disowned by his father. The older of the sons runs afoul of an outlaw motorcycle club; the younger of the two sons gets drafted but is rejected because of his homosexuality. The older one joins his younger brother in a gay rights protest.

Charismatic Czech brain surgeon Tomas (Daniel Day-Lewis), a successful lothario in Communist Czechoslovakia is pursuing a love/hate affair with Sabina (Lena Olin), an equally care-free artist in Prague. Eventually, the boys are caught by members of a local shooting party. The men prepare to execute the boys, but simply laugh as they walk away instead of executing them. The ending is ambiguous: The men either actually spared the boys, or they could be walking into the afterlife.
