Jane Novak (January 12, 1896 – February 3, 1990) was an American actress of the silent film era. She was the sister of actress Eva Novak, and niece of actress Anne Schaefer.

Biography

Durant la période du muet, à partir de 1913, Jane Novak contribue à près de quatre-vingt-dix films américains, dont de nombreux courts métrages dans les années 1910. Son dernier film muet est le western (elle en tourne plusieurs) Le Peau-rouge de Victor Schertzinger, avec Richard Dix, sorti en 1929.

Entretemps, elle apparaît notamment dans The Innocent Sinner de Raoul Walsh (1917, avec Miriam Cooper et Charles Clary) et Notre héros de Frank Borzage (1925, avec Madge Bellamy et Leslie Fenton). Mentionnons aussi sa participation au film britannique The Prude's Fall (1924, avec Miles Mander) et au film germano-britannique Le Voyou (1925, avec Walter Rilla), tous deux réalisés par Graham Cutts.

Mary Carroll (Lizabeth Scott) inherits her family's ancestral home, located on a small island off Cuba, and, despite warnings and death threats, decides to sail to Havana and take possession of the reputedly haunted castle. She is joined by nightclub entertainer Larry Todd (Martin) who, believing he has killed a mobster, flees New York with a friend, Myron (Lewis). Once on the island the three enter the eerie castle and, after viewing the ghost of one of Mary's ancestors and fighting off a menacing zombie, find the key to the castle's treasure.

T. C. Jeffords (Walter Huston) is a wealthy cattle baron who feels the Herrera family is squatting illegally on his property, The Furies. T.C.'s beloved daughter, Vance (Barbara Stanwyck), who is as obsessed with wealth and every bit as ruthless as her father, has a close bond with Juan Herrera (Gilbert Roland) in secret. What she wants more is a proper husband who can run the giant ranch with her once T.C. is gone. She falls in love with Rip Darrow (Wendell Corey), who holds a grudge against T.C., believing a portion of The Furies land to be rightfully his. Vance is shocked when Rip accepts a $50,000 bribe from T.C. to permanently get out of her life. Rip opens a bank in town near a saloon he owns called "The Legal Tender".

Set around 1900, the titular Lazybones is in love with Agnes. Her sister, Ruth, returns home with a child and a story about marrying a seaman who was lost at sea. She attempts suicide by jumping in the river, but Lazybones saves her and, taking pity on the child, Kit, adopts her without revealing her true mother. Agnes and Ruth's mother is very strict and when told by Ruth of the child, strikes her with a cane. As the years pass, Ruth dies and Lazybones goes off to World War I. When he returns, intending to marry Kit now that she is grown up, he finds that she is in love with Dick Ritchie.
