Jean Achache commence sa carrière de cinéaste au milieu des années 1970 aux côtés de Robert Enrico en tant qu'assistant réalisateur pour Le Vieux Fusil et Le Secret. Dans les années quatre-vingt, il collabore avec Bertrand Tavernier sur des films comme La mort en direct ou encore Un dimanche à la campagne. Jean Achache se tourne ensuite vers la réalisation de ses propres œuvres au travers de clips, documentaires comme Diabolo's Workshop avec Terry Gilliam et films comme l'adaptation du roman de Christian Gailly : Un soir au Club en 2009.En 2006, il publie son premier roman Juste une nuit aux Éditions du masque.

The story takes place during a Sunday in the late summer of 1912. Monsieur Ladmiral is a painter without any real genius and in the twilight of his life. The film is set in a future where death from illness has become extremely unusual. When Katherine Mortenhoe (Romy Schneider) is diagnosed as having an incurable disease, she becomes a celebrity and is besieged by journalists. The television company NTV (headed by Vincent Ferriman) offers her a large sum of money if she will allow her last days to be filmed and made into a reality television show – they have already spied on her as she is told of her diagnosis (her doctor is colluding with them) and prepared posters for the show which show her face (to her annoyance when she sees the posters on display before they have contacted her).

At the start we see "David" Jean-Louis Trintignant as a prisoner in some sort of torture chamber, a row of cells whose occupants, in straitjackets, are chained to their beds. David manages to escape from custody. On the run, he arrives at the home of a couple living in an isolated farmhouse (Marlène Jobert and Philippe Noiret). He claims that he is in possession of an important secret, one that he came across by chance, that is so terrible that the authorities will do anything to protect it. He predicts, correctly, that the state will soon mobilize all its resources to find him, using as a cover story the claim that a paranoid killer is on the loose from an asylum. The couple are unsure whether to believe him, but give him some assistance. Whether David is an unlucky but innocent fugitive or is the psychopath described by the police and press remains a mystery until the last moment of the film.
