Jean Dixon (July 14, 1896 – February 12, 1981) was an American stage and film actress.

Biography

Née d'un père (Jean Jacques) agent de théâtre, Marie Jacques étudie en France l'art dramatique, se formant notamment à Paris auprès de Sarah Bernhardt. De retour aux États-Unis en 1921, elle adopte le pseudonyme de Jean Dixon et débute en 1926 à Broadway (New York), où elle joue dans seize pièces, la dernière en 1959-1960. En particulier, elle participe à trois créations du dramaturge George S. Kaufman, notamment George Washington slept here (1940-1941), pièce coécrite par Moss Hart.

Au cinéma, elle apparaît dans seulement treize films américains, de 1929 à 1938. Mentionnons Vivre et aimer de Clarence Brown (1934, avec Joan Crawford et Gene Raymond), Mon homme Godfrey de Gregory La Cava (version de 1936, avec Carole Lombard et William Powell), J'ai le droit de vivre de Fritz Lang (1937, avec Sylvia Sidney et Henry Fonda), ou encore Vacances de George Cukor (son dernier film, de 1938, avec Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn et Edward Everett Horton).

Johnny Case (Cary Grant), a self-made man who has worked all of his life, is about to marry Julia Seton (Doris Nolan), whom he met while on holiday in Lake Placid, New York. He knows very little about his bride-to-be, and is flabbergasted to learn that she is from an extremely wealthy family, the daughter of banker Edward Seton (Henry Kolker). He meets Julia's vivacious sister Linda (Katharine Hepburn), to whom he confides his plan to take a long holiday from work to find the meaning of life, and also meets the sisters' dissolute brother Ned (Lew Ayres), whose spirit has been broken by subservience to his father. At first, the father is stunned when Julia tells him about her plan to marry Johnny, but he is appeased after meeting him and looking into his work history. Julia makes plans for an elaborate New Year's Eve engagement party, even though she promised Linda that she could throw Johnny and Julia a smaller, more personal affair that would include only close friends.

Eddie Taylor (Henry Fonda) is an ex-convict who cannot get a break after being released from prison. He marries but is then wrongly convicted for a bank robbery in which six people are killed. He is sentenced to death by electrocution. On the eve of his execution a gun smuggled into the execution area enables him to escape. During the escape he unintentionally kills the prison chaplain. The chaplain was trying to convince Eddie that he has had a last minute pardon. This is because the body of the guilty bank robber and the getaway vehicle with the stolen money have just been recovered from a lake.

Source: During the Great Depression, Godfrey "Smith" Parke (William Powell) is living alongside other men down on their luck at the city dump.
