Jean Heywood (born 15 July 1921) is a British actress. Born in Blyth, Northumberland, Heywood has appeared in films such as Billy Elliot and Our Day Out. Her TV work includes roles in When the Boat Comes In, All Creatures Great and Small, Boys from the Blackstuff, Family Affairs, The Bill and Casualty. In 2010 Heywood made a guest appearance in the ITV series Married Single Other.

The film is set in the fictional County Durham mining town of Everington Village during the 1984-85 UK miners' strike, and centres on the character of 11-year-old Billy Elliot, his love of dance, and his hopes of becoming a professional ballet dancer. Billy lives with his widowed father, Jackie, and older brother, Tony, both coal miners out on strike (the latter being the union leader), and also his maternal grandmother, who probably has Alzheimer's disease and once aspired to be a professional dancer. Billy's mother, Jenny, died on 2 December 1983, aged 38.

The story begins in 1860 in Basin Field, a small (fictional) village on the slopes of the great mountains that border Canada in the "Far West." The film depicts the idealistic lifestyle of an old West farmer, his Indian wife and half-breed son, who narrates the tale. The main character is "Doc" (Pieraccioni), the village doctor, his Indian wife Pearl (Holt) and their son Jeremiah. Their idyllic life is disrupted when his grandfather, an old gunslinger, shows up on the farm. Doc's father Johnny Lowen (Keitel), a famous gunfighter, suddenly returns. Johnny says he has returned home to find rest and to finally retire. The family is not happy with his return, given his past lifestyle and mistreatment of his family.

The film centres on a school trip to Conwy Castle in North Wales. Mrs. Kay teaches a remedial class for illiterate children, called the "Progress Class". The whole class - along with Digga and Reilly, the slightly older class bullies who used to be in the Progress Class - are taken on a coach trip. In the original version, the headmaster, Mr Briggs makes the decision to go on the trip as an extra member of staff, emphasising his mistrust of the liberal values of Mrs Kay. However, in the shorter stage version the Headteacher commissions Mr. Briggs, the authoritarian Deputy Headmaster, to supervise the trip.
