Perry was married to actress Laurie Metcalf from 1983 until 1992. They had a child, actress Zoe Perry, together in 1984, but they subsequently divorced. He is currently married to Grey's Anatomy's casting director, Linda Lowy, with whom he has a daughter named Leah.

Perry was born in Highland Park, Illinois, where his father was a teacher at Highland Park High School. Perry is the youngest of three siblings. Sisters Jo and Janice are both deceased. His nephew, Jai Henry serves as his social media assistant.Perry was married to actress Laurie Metcalf from 1983 until 1992. They had a child, actress Zoe Perry, together in 1984, but they subsequently divorced. He is currently married to Grey's Anatomy's casting director, Linda Lowy, with whom he has a daughter named Leah.

In the late 1990s, writer Nathan Zuckerman (Gary Sinise) has settled in a lakeside New England cabin following his second divorce and a battle with prostate cancer. A Miami area high school guidance counselor, Sam Lombardo (Dillon), is accused of rape by two female students, the wealthy and popular Kelly Van Ryan (Richards) and poor outcast Suzie Toller (Campbell), and hires lawyer Kenneth Bowden (Murray) to defend him. At trial, Suzie admits that she and Kelly had made everything up to get revenge on Lombardo: Suzie for him failing to bail her out of jail on a minor drug charge and Kelly for him having an affair with her mother, Sandra. A talented young Jamie Harris is a struggling actress who is trying to win a role in an upcoming film called "Playmaker". Eager to gain advantage on the competition, Harris' friend Eddie says that he can arrange an introduction with Ross Talbert, an acting teacher with a reputation for grooming top talent. Talbert agrees to tutor Harris for $5,000; she scrapes up the money, only to discover that his lessons are mainly exercises in psychological abuse. Harris learns that a number of Talbert's students who didn't respond to his techniques have turned up dead, and she spies an "F" next to her name in his grade book shortly before he attacks her with a knife; she grabs a gun and kills him. The police determine that Jamie acted in self-defense - but the man who she's been taking lessons with wasn't the real Ross Talbert. As the police arrive at the scene a different corpse is lying dead on the ground, which seems to be the real teacher. As a result, she tries to find the false teacher, and discovers that he was just an actor like herself, named Michael Condren, and that she is just a puppet on a string in a perverse and bizarre story.

Set on Long Island, the film opens with Joey Buttafuoco (Jack Scalia) driving under influence of cocaine, fleeing from the cops and visiting his mother's grave.
