In 1937 Hawaii, four native Hawaiian men find a white woman, beaten nearly to death, and take her to a hospital—only to be charged later with her rape and assault. During their trial, the woman's husband, a lieutenant in the US Navy, fatally shoots one of them and later stands trial himself. Kevin Leahy, an alcoholic Catholic priest who has strayed from his faith, crashes his car and is pronounced dead at the scene. As penance, he is sent back to Earth to fight evil as an exorcist, and returns to life. The Helen Page School, a Catholic all-girls college in Salem, Oregon is on the brink of graduation season, and are about to go coed the following semester. Ellen Sumner (Claudette Nevins), is a teacher at the school, where her daughter, Weezie, attends. One evening, the paper in Ellen's typewriter inexplicably bursts into flames.

A woman and two children are kidnapped by Apaches. The husband Lorne Warfield (Glenn Ford), enlists the help of his neighbor Owen Forbes (Arthur Kennedy) to find his captured family. Warfield is a former gunman trying to forget his violent past. Forbes, a decent and humane rancher, is also in love with Warfield's wife and feels guilty that he let her be captured without trying to help. An Indian trader (Dean Jagger) aids them in their quest. Along the way they are encounter Mexican bandits, Apache warriors, renegade soldiers, and a town blighted by cholera. While Warfield in his cynicism immediately recognizes malevolent motives, each encounter results in further stripping Forbes of his humanity and making him accustomed to killing. The search eventually leads them to the Apache camp where they rescue the woman and children. Safely back home, Forbes challenges Warfield (who is now unarmed, trading his gun to a storekeeper for clothing for his family) to a duel, but he refuses. Forbes shoots Warfield in the back, wounding him. Before he can finish him off, he is shot and killed by the storekeeper using Warfield's gun.

In Hollywood, screenwriter James Lee Bartlow (Dick Powell), movie star Georgia Lorrison (Lana Turner), and director Fred Amiel (Barry Sullivan) each refuse to speak by phone to Jonathan Shields (Kirk Douglas) in Paris. Movie producer Harry Pebbel (Walter Pidgeon) gathers them in his office and explains that Shields was calling them because he has a new film idea and he wants the three of them for the project. In May 1953, a new group of Army recruits at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas encounter their drill sergeants, Sgt. Laverne Holt (Karl Malden) and the tough-as-nails Sgt. Thorne Ryan (Richard Widmark). In 1851, Roy Whitman (John McIntire) decides to bring marriageable women west to California to join the lonely men of Whitman's Valley, hoping the couples will put down roots and settle there. Roy hires a skeptical, experienced wagon master, Buck Wyatt (Robert Taylor), to lead the wagon train along the California Trail. In Chicago, Roy recruits 138 "good women", after they have been warned of the journey's hardships and dangers by Buck, who flatly states up to a third of them might not survive the journey. The women range from Patience (Hope Emerson), an older widow from New Bedford seeking a new start after losing her sea captain husband and sons when their clipper went down while attempting to round Cape Horn, to Rose Meyers (Beverly Dennis), a pregnant, unmarried woman running from her shame. Telling the women about his valley, Roy encourages them to pick their prospective mates from daguerreotype pictures he has tacked to a display board. Two showgirls, Fifi Danon (Denise Darcel) and Laurie Smith (Julie Bishop), hastily change their flashy clothes when others like them are rejected and return to try and sign on again. Whitman is not fooled by their disguise, but convinced their wish to reform is sincere he adds them to the group, bringing the number of women on the wagon train up to 140.

The film begins in 1943 at Camp Shelby, Mississippi, with newly commissioned Lt. Michael Grayson (Johnson) reporting for duty with the 442nd, then in training. He discovers that he has been sent to a unit composed of Nisei; he had expected to return to the U.S. 36th Infantry Division, a Texas National Guard unit with which he had served as an enlisted man. Having joined the war to fight against the Japanese, he is disturbed to find he is expected to fight alongside people whom he sees as Japanese, rather than Americans. From the outset, Grayson runs his platoon rather harshly, including an almost martinet-like insistence upon the strict observance of regulations.
