James Henry Kinmel Sangster (2 December 1927 – 19 August 2011) was a Welsh screenwriter and director, known for his work for horror film producers Hammer Film Productions, including scripts for The Curse of Frankenstein (the first British horror movie to be shot in colour) and Dracula (US: Horror of Dracula).
Sangster originally worked as a production assistant at the studio, as well as assistant director, second unit director and production manager. After Hammer Films Productions' success with The Quatermass Xperiment, Sangster was approached to write The Curse of Frankenstein, to which he said, "I'm not a writer. I'm a production manager." According to Sangster, Hammer Films' response was, "Well, you come up with a couple of ideas and if we like it, we'll pay you. If we don't like it, we won't pay you. You're being paid as a production manager, so you can't complain." He later turned to direction with The Horror of Frankenstein and Lust for a Vampire (both 1970) for the studio, but with far less success. His third (and last) film as director was 1972's Fear in the Night, which resurrected the psychological woman-in-peril thriller Sangster had begun with his script for Taste of Fear in 1961. All three of these films featured actor Ralph Bates, one of Hammer's best-known actors of the latter period of the company.
Sangster scripted and produced two films for Bette Davis, The Nanny (1965) and The Anniversary (1968).
Other scriptwriting credits included The Siege of Sidney Street (1960) which starred Donald Sinden and in which Sangster appeared as Winston Churchill.
He is survived by his third wife, the actress Mary Peach and by a son from an earlier marriage, Mark James Sangster and two grandchildren, Claire and Ian Sangster.

Peggy (Judy Geeson), an unassuming twenty-two year old caregiver, has recently married Robert Heller (Ralph Bates), and is scheduled to move with him to a secluded boys' boarding school south of London for his work. The night before she is to meet Robert to leave the city, she is attacked in her home by a one-armed man with a prosthetic hand who strangles her until she falls unconscious. Rattled by the attack, she leaves with Robert the following morning to the boarding school, which is run by headmaster Michael Carmichael (Peter Cushing).

Une jeune femme Peggy Heller : (Judy Geeson) est attaquée dans son appartement par un mystérieux personnage, elle ne distingue pas son visage mais remarque son bras gauche en bois. In 1830, at a finishing school in Styria, Mircalla arrives as a new student. Max Devlin (Elliott Gould) is a shady landlord of a rundown tenement in Los Angeles who is rather jaded and callous towards his fellow man. One day while chasing an errant tenant, he is run over by a bus and killed. He descends into hell (which resembles a corporate business) and meets the Devil's chief henchman Barney Satin (read: Satan) (Bill Cosby). He is told of his life of sin and the fact that he is doomed to spend eternity at a section called Level 4. However, he is given a chance to save himself by convincing three other people to sell their souls in exchange for his. Max returns to Earth and begins his frantic quest with two months (ending on May 15) to complete his mission. Barney appears frequently throughout the movie to check up on Max's progress as well as both taunt and persuade him to carry out the plans. A running joke is that nobody, except Max, can see or hear Barney.

Maggie Walsh (Ross) and her boyfriend Pete Danner (Elliott) are interior decorators from California. They are retained by an anonymous British client. Their reluctance to abandon their current client in Los Angeles is alleviated when that client dies suddenly in mysterious circumstances. Maggie et Pete sont un couple de décorateurs d'intérieur en Californie. Ils sont sollicités par un mystérieux client britannique mais ils refusent d'abord de s'éloigner de leur pays natal. Après avoir accepté de se rendre chez lui en Angleterre, ils sont victimes d'un accident de voiture dans la campagne anglaise. L'autre véhicule impliquée dans la collision n'est d'autre que la limousine de leur bienfaiteur millionaire, Jason Mountolive. Celui-ci les invite dans son château dans lequel ils sont aussitôt rejoints par cinq autres personnes, venues pour la lecture du testament de Mountolive. En effet, celui-ci est mourant et compte leur dévoiler son héritage. Intriguée par son changement de santé, Maggie se rend à son chevet et Jason lui offre un anneau qu'elle ne peut pas enlever de son doigt, un joyau que possèdent tous les autres invités. Très vite, ils meurent accidentellement les uns après les autres dans des circonstances atroces. Maggie découvre qu'elle n'est pas dans le château par hasard mais qu'elle a un lien avec la famille Mountolive, dont le père de Jason a été brûlé vif avec son épouse, Margaret Walsingham, car ils ont été accusés d'hérésie et de sorcellerie.
