Joseph Laurence 'Joe' Lynch (16 July 1925 – 1 August 2001) was an Irish actor who enjoyed a long career in both serious drama and light comedy. He also did voice work for children's animated series, in particular Chorlton and the Wheelies. He had a fine singing voice and composed songs, such as for the film Johnny Nobody (1961). He also recorded the work of other songwriters, including Leo Maguire's "The Whistling Gypsy" and Dick Farrelly's "Cottage by the Lee", one of Joe's biggest 1950s recordings.

Joe Lynch attended the North Monastery CBS and first came to fame in Ireland in the 1950s when his radio show Living with Lynch was broadcast on Sunday nights on Radio Éireann. He was also a founding member of the Radio Éireann Players and played in productions of Teresa Deevy's plays amongst others. Lynch appeared in the popular ABC/Thames TV sitcom Never Mind the Quality, Feel the Width between 1968 and 1970, and in its spin-off feature film in 1973. His other notable film roles included The Siege of Sidney Street (1960), The Running Man (1963), Girl with Green Eyes (1964), The Face of Fu Manchu (1965), Ulysses (1967), Loot (1970), The Mackintosh Man (1973), The Outsider (1980), If You Go Down in the Woods Today (1981) and Eat the Peach (1986). In the 1970s Lynch made regular guest appearances as Elsie Tanner's boyfriend in the long-running Granada TV soap Coronation Street.

In 1962, and again in 1977, Lynch won a Jacob's Award for his acting on RTÉ television.

By 1979 Lynch was back in Ireland and made his first appearances as Dinny Byrne in the RTÉ soap Bracken. Later the Dinny Byrne character would feature in the long-running RTÉ soap Glenroe – along with his catchphrase "Is there an'thin' stirrin?"

Lynch quit Glenroe after being "shamefully treated" and offered "small potatoes" when he asked for a pay rise. He was also upset that he was not to get a pension. RTÉ refuted these claims. Lynch criticised RTÉ for preventing him from doing other acting work alongside Glenroe. "I was terrible restricted in RTÉ, they wouldn't let me off for anything, even commercials."

Lynch was also the voice of the main antagonist Grundel the Toad of the Don Bluth film Thumbelina, his final audio work before his death seven years later.

The story takes place in an Irish village a few miles from the border with Northern Ireland. When the local Japanese owned computer factory closes, the principal employer in the area seems to become the mob that runs the smuggling. One day, Vinnie, (Stephen Brennan), one of the men thrown out of work, and his brother-in-law, Arthur, (Eamon Morissey), happen to see a videotape of the 1964 Elvis Presley film Roustabout, in the village bar. They see a cyclist in the film ride in a carnival Wall of Death - a high walled barrel-like tank where centrifugal force keeps the rider up in the air circling. Straight away Vinnie makes diagrams, and measures - and clears a patch of land near his house. His wife, Nora (Catherine Byrne - Alice More in the series The Tudors), protests and goes back to her mother with their little girl, Vicky. It's a new kitchen she wants, not a Wall of Death. The men however, continue with the work and sinking tree posts into the ground and putting up a huge cylindrical construction. They become energetic and resourceful. Vinnie believes his Wall of Death will be a source of income - that people will buy tickets to stand on a gallery around the top of the rink and watch him and Arthur give their daring performances. Nora returns.

MacKintosh and his deputy, Mrs Smith, inform him of a simple way to steal diamonds which are transported via the post service to avoid attention. This he does, apparently getting successfully away after punching a postman, and making off with the diamond-filled parcel. However, that evening, in his hotel room he is paid a visit by two Metropolitan Police detectives who have received an anonymous phone call advising them about the robbery. When the pamphlets he has written incite riots, Cassidy realizes he can do more for his people with the pen than with the sword. Yeats, the founder of the Abbey, accepts and produces his new play. In Croydon, England, seemingly grieving Stella Black (Lee Remick) has just returned home from her husband's funeral. Apparently, he died in a gliding accident when the glider he had rented crashed into the sea, and his body was never recovered. In reality, she knows her husband Rex Black (Laurence Harvey) is still alive and has been in hiding at a seaside boarding house for three months under the assumed name of Erskine, a shoe salesman on vacation, between the time of his "death" and the funeral. He has just clandestinely returned home following the funeral. They are perpetrating this ruse to collect on the £50,000 life insurance money from the Excelsior Insurance Company. They feel Excelsior owes them this money as, in the previous year, Excelsior did not pay out a £20,000 business insurance claim when his airplane, which he used to operate his own transport company, went down in bad weather on a flight to Hamburg, West Germany, and was destroyed. His insurance had lapsed by two days due to someone's error in not paying the latest premium – Rex admitting that it may have been his error - which in turn ruined his business.
