Joe Rickson (born Oscar Erickson) (September 6, 1880 – January 8, 1958) was an American actor of the silent era. He appeared in 90 films between 1913 and 1945. He was born in Clearcreek, Montana and died in Los Angeles, California.

Naive Montana cowboy Duke Fergus (John Wayne) arrives in San Francisco and visits the notorious Barbary Coast. He becomes smitten with the lovely star attraction of the fanciest gambling hall, "Flaxen" Tarry (Ann Dvorak), the "Flame of the Barbary Coast". He gets talked into gambling against the owner (and Flaxen's lover), card shark Tito Morell (Joseph Schildkraut). Predictably, Fergus gets cheated and loses all his money.

In 1880, a motley group of strangers boards the east-bound stagecoach from Tonto, Arizona Territory to Lordsburg, New Mexico Territory. These travelers are unremarkable and ordinary at first glance. Among them are Dallas (Claire Trevor), a prostitute who is being driven out of town by the members of the "Law and Order League"; an alcoholic doctor, Doc Boone (Thomas Mitchell); pregnant Lucy Mallory (Louise Platt), who is traveling to see her cavalry officer husband; and whiskey salesman Samuel Peacock (Donald Meek).

The American government has agreed with the Cherokee Indians to purchase the rights to their land known as the Cherokee Strip (actually, the Cherokee Outlet) in the future state of Oklahoma. After the money arrives by train, it is then loaded onto a stagecoach which subsequently gets robbed by Whip McCord (Humphrey Bogart) and his gang. Jim Kincaid, aka, "The Oklahoma Kid", (James Cagney) sees the robbery, and then ambushes the gang and makes off with the money.

Jim Wright et Skeeter Burke sont engagés pour participer au rodéo organisé par le Colonel Ben Hall. Ce dernier offre 1 000 $ pour la capture de Devil, un cheval sauvage, pour qu'il soit la principale attraction du spectacle. Jim et Skeeter capturent le cheval, mais Gil Baker le vole et tue Skeeter dans la bagarre qui s'ensuit. Le shérif trouve Jim près du corps de Skeeter et l'arrête pour le meurtre. Sur le chemin vers la prison, quelqu'un tire sur le shérif et le blesse, Jim le transporte alors en ville et réussit à s'échapper. Il retourne voir le colonel et découvre que Baker se targue d'avoir capturé Devil. Jim raconte alors au colonel et à sa fille Alice ce qui s'est passé et ils le cachent. La publicité pour le rodéo annonçait Baker comme cavalier de Devil mais, lorsqu'il reconnaît Jim, il s'enfuit. Pour sauver le spectacle, Jim monte le cheval, mais il est reconnu et arrêté. Il arrive à s'évader de prison, mais le shérif, croyant à son innocence, ne le poursuit pas. Jim capture Baker et sauve ainsi sa réputation.
