John Elliot was a prolific American actor who appeared on Broadway and in over 300 films during his lengthy career. He worked sporadically during the silent film era, but with the advent of sound his career took off, where he worked constantly for 25 years, finding a particular niche in "B" westerns. His versatility allowed him to play both "good guys" and "bad guys" with equal aplomb, working right up until his death in 1956.

The film sees US Deputy Marshal Dan Lawson teaming up with RCMP Sergeant Gray to go undercover and capture the nefarious smuggler Bart Randall. Lawson, posing as an outlaw called Laramie, is ready to infiltrate the gang led by Randall, a self-styled Gun Emperor of the Northwest, who is wanted for murder and bank robbery in the United States. In addition to the difficulties inherent in the mission, Lawson has other issues to deal with, including the use of a fake totem and flying a hydra plane to overawe the menacing Indians and regenade whites. He also is aided in his search by Donna Blaine, who is suspected at first of giving information to Randall, but who in reality is a Canadian secret agent investigating Randall's illegal gun trading with the Indians.

Slip's cousin Jimmy is released from prison for good behavior and comes to live with him and his mother. Unfortunately the only job he can get is stealing cars for a local mobster, Tony Locarno. Slip learns about this and sets out to stop Jimmy from ruining his life. He follows Jimmy to a warehouse that Jimmy is robbing and gets knocked unconscious and is caught by the police. Ex-con turned private investigator Bradford Galt (Mark Stevens) suspects someone is following him and maybe even trying to kill him. With the assistance of his secretary Kathleen (Lucille Ball), he dives deep into a mystery in search of answers. Galt turns the tables on the man following him (William Bendix), who claims to be a private eye named Foss, hired by Galt's sworn enemy, a corrupt lawyer named Tony Jardine. In the meantime, Jardine has begun having an affair with the much-younger wife of Hardy Cathcart (Clifton Webb), a wealthy art-gallery owner. It appears that Jardine is setting up Galt to take another fall. But it turns out Foss is not a private eye but a thug named Stauffer, secretly working for Cathcart. He ambushes Galt, knocking him out with ether, then murders Jardine and places a bloody poker in Galt's hand. Kathleen has fallen in love with Galt, so she aids him in covering up the crime and in trying to find out who's behind it. Cathcart, rather than pay off Stauffer, pushes him through a window to his death. It appears Cathcart has thought of everything, but just as he is about to eliminate Galt at the art gallery, someone else arrives to ruin Cathcart's diabolical plan.
