John A. Russo (born 1939), sometimes credited as Jack Russo or John Russo, is an American screenwriter and film director most commonly associated with the 1968 horror classic Night of the Living Dead. As a screenwriter, his credits include Night of the Living Dead, The Majorettes, Midnight, and Santa Claws. The latter two, he also directed. He has performed small roles as an actor, most notably the first ghoul who is stabbed in the head in Night of the Living Dead, as well as cameos in There's Always Vanilla and House of Frankenstein 1997. John Russo is also the founder and one of the co-mentors along with Russell Streiner of the John Russo Movie Making Program at DuBois Business College in DuBois, Pennsylvania. John A. Russo has completed several interviews over the years discussing his film making career, with a recent interview with BioGamer Girl Magazine, in which he appeared on the magazine's radio show Undead Noise. Movie Emporium Inc. will released Russo's CD John Russo's Movie Music, his CD is filled with Songs from his films.

Barbra (Judith O'Dea) and Johnny Blair (Russell Streiner) drive to rural Pennsylvania for an annual visit to their father's grave. This was their mother's request. Johnny teases, "They're coming to get you, Barbra," noticing Barbra's discomfort. She is then attacked by a strange man (Bill Hinzman). Johnny tries to rescue his sister, but the strange man throws him against a gravestone; Johnny strikes his head on the stone and dies. Barbra flees by car but crashes into a tree. She escapes on foot, with the stranger in pursuit, and later arrives at a farmhouse, where she discovers a woman's mangled corpse. She is confronted by strange menacing figures, running out of the house, like the man in the graveyard. Ben (Duane Jones) takes her into the house. Ben drives the monsters from the house and seals the doors and windows as Barbra slowly descends into shock and insanity.

Following the execution of a convicted child rapist and murderer, drivers Dan and Mike are in the process of delivering the corpse to the county cemetery for anonymous burial. After brief words by Reverend Hicks, Dan and Mike notice that the corpse appears to be twitching and possibly even moving. They are suddenly attacked by the reanimated corpse, prompting them to flee to Beekman's Diner. Meanwhile, Barbra (Judith O'Dea) and Johnny (Russell Streiner) drive to rural Pennsylvania for an annual visit to their father's grave, at their mother's request. Noticing Barbra's discomfort, Johnny teases, "They're coming to get you, Barbra", before she is attacked by a strange man (Bill Hinzman), the same reanimated corpse that Dan and Mike were in the process of burying. In this latest interpretation, the characters Barb and her brother Johnny arrive late for their aunt's funeral and find the cemetery overrun with zombies. After Johnny abandons her, Barb flees the cemetery and is rescued by Ben, a local college student. The two seek refuge in the nearby farmhouse of the Cooper family (Henry & Hellie Cooper, Henry's daughter and Hellie's stepdaughter Karen, farmhand Owen, and farmhand Tom and his girlfriend Judy), and attempt to live through the night along with other survivors, including the pyrophobic mortician, Gerald Tovar, Jr. As Barb and Ben attempt to convince the Cooper family that the zombies are heading to the house, Tom and Judy are attacked while having sex in the barn. After hearing Judy's screams, Barb and the rest of the household attempt to save her, but they are too late. When Tovar arrives, he explains what is happening. Owen the farmhand and Karen succumb to zombie bites and become undead.
