Actress-journalist Josefina Echánove was born and raised in Guanajuato, Mexico. She came to fame with the release of the short film Laberinto in 1975. In late 1970s, Josefina worked in the Premios ACE award winning Drama Telenovela "La Plaza de Puerto Santo".She married lawyer Alonso Echánove, and together they have two daughters and one son. Their oldest son, Alonso Echánove, is an actor. Their daughters are Peggy Echánove and pop singer Marisol de las Mercedes Echánove, who is publicly known as María del Sol.

Perdita (Rosie Perez) is a tough, no-nonsense lady clad in a Tura Satana-style black outfit. She meets Romeo Dolorosa (Javier Bardem), a maniacal criminal who also happens to be an even more maniacal witch doctor. Romeo robs a bank but risks getting caught in order to force the Bank Teller to strip her shirt and reveal her large breasts. Once in the street, he hides his face from the cops by grabbing and french kissing a random woman on the street. Crossing the border into Mexico together, Perdita and Romeo become lovers and partners in crime as they kidnap a random Anglo-Saxon teenage couple in order to sacrifice them. Along the way they also hijack a truckload of human fetuses and try to evade a determined Drug Enforcement Administration officer (James Gandolfini).

Chico Mendes was a Brazilian rubber tapper, unionist and environmental activist who was murdered in 1988 by ranchers opposed to his activism. The movie opens in 1951 with a young Chico Mendes witnessing his father's interaction with corrupt ranchers who are exploiting peasants for their work. The bulk of the film then takes place between 1983 and 1988, showing Mendes' activism to preserve the Amazon rainforest, to his murder in a drive-by shooting by a disgruntled rancher.

American schoolteacher Harriet Winslow (Jane Fonda) goes to Mexico to work as a governess for the Miranda family, and becomes caught up in the Mexican revolution. Mexicans transporting her from Chihuahua, secretly soldiers of Pancho Villa's army, use her luggage to smuggle weapons to the servants at the Miranda hacienda. The story unfolds in a family of landowners from the colonial era, which owns a sugar plantation on the edge of the jungle. While hunting in the forest one day, the father, Don Everardo, discovers a young black orphan by the river. He leads the child to his great farm and call him Gaspar. Friendly and intelligent, the boy quickly becomes a new member of the family. He plays with his son, Sebastian and his two daughters, Emma and Lucilla, as if they were his own sisters. In a separate story, this family takes fine dining. One of his favorite mushroom dishes are prepared with an old family recipe from Spain. The family discovers if the mushroom is edible collected getting a volunteer to eat a few first. If voluntary collapses and dies, then the family does not serve mushrooms in the party.
