The film begins with an opening quote from James 2:17. A pastor (McGinley) is shaken by a street preacher regarding his faith, which causes a chain of events for twelve different people, moving towards one cataclysmic event. Some will survive while others will not, but many lives will be changed. An older couple (Shepherd and Majors) have lost their only child. The aforementioned pastor and his wife (Tracy Melchior) were unable to conceive a child. A mother (Sorvino) and young daughter (Makenzie Moss) find themselves homeless, a young nurse (Dominguez) and her husband (Matthews) are caught in a court case that may ruin their lives. A young mother (Pettis) is about to give birth. A war veteran (Soria) returns home with PTSD. A suicidal young woman (PenaVega) seeks to see her father and feel loved again. A street gang is caught up in the mix when one of the members (Shwayze) unexpectedly ends up in church while running and hiding from the police.

Army private first class Amy Cole (Kristen Stewart) is placed as a guard at Guantanamo Bay detention camp, specifically Camp Delta. As a new guard at the prison she is first cold towards the detainees despite the fact of her showing dislike to certain actions towards the detainees. Eight months pass and she even writes a report to explain an irregularity on a shower shift that lead to a detainee (Peyman Moaadi) feeling uncomfortable. By the end of the film she stops him from committing suicide. At this point it is clear that her convictions towards the detainee are much different as she seems in distress and really affected by the possibility of him ending dead. The film ends by her leaving Guantanamao and leaving him a Harry Potter book he had been asking for years.

In his spare time Jim (Jake Hoffman) makes his own dubstep mixes, as he sees them as an outlet to express himself in ways that he is otherwise incapable of achieving. He's constantly harangued by his roommate Jake (Thomas Dekker), who views Jim as a loser and wants him to do more than just hang around the apartment all day. It's through his work at a women's shelter that he meets Wendy (Nikki Reed) and the two initially begin to form a connection as they both share a love of dubstep and because Wendy recognizes that they share a lot of the same issues in life. This relationship proves to be short lived after Jim accidentally prematurely ejaculates during a date. Jake is sure that Wendy will only spread the story around and ruin Jim's life by holding him up as an object of ridicule. With few other options Jim begins to take more and more of Jake's advice, which sets him on a far darker path than he could have expected.
