Joseph Levering (né à Columbus, dans l'Indiana, le 20 juillet 1874, et mort à Kansas City, dans le Missouri, le 27 août 1943) est un acteur, scénariste et réalisateur américain, de la période du cinéma muet, puis du parlant.

Biography

En tant qu'acteur, la grande majorité des films dans lesquels il apparaît sont des courts-métrages. Son seul film parlant (et son dernier en tant qu'acteur) est Sporting Chance, d'Albert Herman. Ne passant pas l'épreuve du parlant, il se consacre dès lors uniquement à la réalisation, et l'écriture de quelques scénarios.

Using Alice Guy-Blachè's adapted screenplay from the Edgar Allan Poe short story of the same name, Alice built upon the lucid and dream-like piece of fiction by adding a significant amount of narrative structure to her adapted screenplay. Rather than having unexplained pain and trauma inflicted upon the films protagonist, Guy built a narrative surrounding the Spanish Inquisition and the film's protagonist fear. The first reel begins with a young and pretty girl named Isabelle (played by Blanche Cornwall) sitting upon a hill. It is then that she is attacked by Pedro (played by Fraunie Fraunholz). And following the common thematic trajectory of the time, Isabelle is then rescued by the kind and brave medical student who spends his time as a minister for the poor, Alonzo (played by Dawrin Karr). Pedro is insistent on revenge and applies to the local monastery where Alonzo works in order to frame him. He hopes to frame him for the mysterious and sudden disappearance of the church's jewels. The frame ends immediately after Pedro plants the jewels in Alonzo's home and the monks are quick to punish Alonzo and Isabelle.

Le vieux Howard Eliot, homme riche, est si heureux auprès de sa jeune infirmière Annabelle Rose, que sur son lit de mort, il lui lègue une enveloppe avec la recommandation que celle-ci ne soit pas être ouverte avant soixante jours à partir de sa mort. Le reste de sa fortune est légué à son fils Arthur, à condition qu'il épouse qui il veut en dehors de son actuelle petite-amie, Verna Devore. Afin de répondre aux exigences paternelles, Arthur met une petite annonce pour trouver une épouse "temporaire". Annabelle, d'une grande pauvreté, répond à la petite annonce et accepte un mariage blanc avec Arthur. Une fois la cérémonie de mariage terminée, Arthur commence à apprécier la douceur d'Annabelle, comparée à la cupidité de Verna. Il réalise qu'il voudrait Annabelle pour plus qu'"épouse temporaire". Les soixante jours passés, Annabelle découvre que le vieillard lui a légué sa fortune, et Arthur qu'il a fait le bon choix.

Karl Von Austreim (Jack Holt) lives in America with his German father and American mother. He notices a young lady, Angela More (Mary Pickford). As she is celebrating her birthday on the Fourth of July of 1914, she receives flowers from the French Count Jules De Destin (Raymond Hatton). They are interrupted by Karl, who also gives her a present. They soon battle for Angela's attention. To lose his competition, Count Jules arranges for Karl to be sent to Hamburg, where he will have to join his regiment. Angela is crushed when he announces he has to leave. The next day, Angela reads in the paper the Germans and French are at war and 10,000 Germans have been killed already.
