Joshua Butler is an American film and television director, film and television producer, film editor, and screenwriter best known for directing the 2001 film Prancer Returns.

Biography

Joshua Butler is the son of Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Robert Olen Butler. Accepted into USC's Cinema-Television directing program while still a junior in high school, he wrote and directed the student short "Will Work for Food". After graduation, Butler edited Paul Monette: The Brink of Summer's End, which won the 1997 Sundance Film Festival Audience Award for documentary.

Butler then began directing television drama series. He segued into film directing with Beer Money for the USA Network, and continued with Prancer Returns for producer Raffaella De Laurentiis and USA, and Sci Fi Pictures Clive Barker Presents Saint Sinner. Butler also served as co-executive producer of the ESPN telefilm A Season on the Brink.

He is a co-founder of Kinetic Pictures with former documentary producer and USC classmate Chet Fenster.

As a television editor, Butler worked on the series Surface, E-Ring, Men in Trees, Friday Night Lights, Life and Warehouse 13. As a television director, he directed episodes of The Invisible Man, G vs E and The Vampire Diaries.

Earth is devaststed by a nuclear war in 2084. The sky is red from chemical waste, and what was once the United States has become "Deathlands" inhabited by mutants. In 1815 California, Father Michael, an emissary of Pope Pius VII, has traveled to meet with novice monk Brother Tomas. The young monk's order serves as the secret repository for evil, supernatural objects collected by the Church, and kept there for safekeeping. Michael delivers an ancient statue that has trapped two beautiful female demons, Munkar and Nakir. Tomas and his friend Brother Gregory inadvertently release the murderous demons, who travel to the 21st century using the monastery's Wheel of Time. To redeem himself, Tomas pursues them to present-day Seattle, Washington, where he allies with police detective Rachel Dressler to recapture the homicidal terrors.
