Juan de Landa (1894–1968) was a Spanish film actor, who was born in the Basque Country. de Landa entered the film industry in 1930 following the arrival of sound film. He initially acted in Spanish-language versions of Hollywood films, but later worked mainly in the Spanish and Italian film industries. His best-known role is in Luchino Visconti's 1943 film Ossessione.

À Brooklyn, des émigrants italiens vivent modestement dans un immeuble où habite également l'avocat Bossi, leur propriétaire, un homme violent et impitoyable. Quand quelqu'un frappe à sa porte pour demander une faveur, Bossi poursuit le visiteur importun en imitant l'aboiement d'un chien furieux. Une vieille femme le maudit un jour d'aboyer toute sa vie jusqu'à ce qu'il trouve quelqu'un qui l'aime. La malédiction est accomplie et Bossi devient un chien errant, affamé et laid. Commence alors pour lui une vie de tristesse, comme ses anciennes victimes. Pendant ce temps, les habitants de l'immeuble, surpris par la disparition de Bossi, respirent mieux sans la pression de payer, avec la complicité du secrétaire de Bossi.

Le conducteur de tramway Cesare Mancini, Romain transféré à Bologne depuis vingt ans, est un très bon homme avec un vilain défaut: il ne sait pas toujours rentrer sa colère. Billy Dannreuther (Humphrey Bogart) is a formerly-wealthy American who has fallen on hard times. He is reluctantly working with four crooks: Peterson (Robert Morley), ex-Nazi Julius O'Hara (Peter Lorre), Major Jack Ross (Ivor Barnard) and Ravello, who are trying to acquire uranium-rich land in British East Africa. Billy suspects that Major Ross has murdered a British Colonial officer who had threatened to expose their plan. While waiting in Italy for passage to Africa, Billy and his wife Maria (Gina Lollobrigida) make the acquaintance of a British couple: Harry (Edward Underdown) and Gwendolen Chelm (Jennifer Jones), who are planning to travel on the same ship. Harry is a very proper and traditional Englishman, while Gwendolen is flighty and fanciful and a compulsive liar. Billy and Gwendolen have an affair, while Maria flirts with Harry. Peterson becomes suspicious that the Chelms may be attempting to acquire the uranium themselves. His suspicians are unfounded, but they seem to him to be confirmed by Gwendolen, who lies about her husband and exaggerates his importance.

Garibaldi, after landing in Marsala, moves on to Naples. The liberals are overjoyed but the Bourbons are terrified. The so-called Baron Tucci, on a recommendation from England, arrives at the home of Count Sereni, a notable liberal. But he turns out not to be a patriot who has returned to Italy to take part in the fight but a degraded Bourbon official who has been promised rehabilitation if he can succeed as a spy. Tucci discovers old Sereni's second wife is one of his former lovers and persuades her to murder her husband so as to gain his inheritance. She does indeed cause the count to die, by withholding his heart medicine, but not before he destroys his will. The count's younger daughter hears the argument which breaks out between the lovers. The false baron tries to kill her but she escapes, racing off to the river. There she is saved by a patriot, who takes her to the devil's castle, where conspirators are meeting. On hearing the news, the spy contacts the police, who arrest the girl's fiancé, a young doctor, one of the leading patriots. Sentenced to death, he is about to be hanged but is saved at the last minute by Garibaldi's cavalry. After dealing with the spy, the young patriot joins his beloved fiancée.

Annesa (played by Columba Dominguez), is a from a declining aristocratic family and very much devoted to her family, the Decherchi, which is at the edge of financial collapse. The fate of the family depends on the success of their efforts to inherit the estate of a distant uncle who, is hosted by the Decherchis, because of his ill health and is now on the verge of dying. Annesa, exacerbated by the refusal of the uncle to help financially Annesa's financially strapped nephew Don Paulu Decherchi (played by Roldano Lupi), that she is secretly in love with, murders the uncle. Despite the suspicions and investigations by the police, the murder is not discovered. But Annesa, overcome by remorse, confesses her deed to a priest.
