A recently widowed single father, Jim Grant (Robert Redford), is a former Weather Underground militant wanted for a 1980 Michigan bank robbery and the murder of the bank's security guard. The story follows a young boy named Leo Colston (Dominic Guard), who in the year 1900 is invited by a school friend, Marcus Maudsley (Richard Gibson), to spend the summer holidays at a Norfolk country house occupied by his family. A rare collection of artifacts from an archeological dig in Egypt are brought to the famous Musée du Louvre in Paris. While experts are using a laser scanning device to determine the age of a sarcophagus, a spirit escapes and makes its way into the museum's electrical system.
