Julio Bracho Gavilán (17 July 1909 – 26 April 1978) was a Mexican film director and screenwriter.

Bracho was born as ninth of eleven children of Julio Bracho y Zuloaga and his wife Luz Pérez Gavilán. His sister Guadalupe Bracho Pérez-Gavilán became known as Andrea Palma, his brother Jesús became known as theatrical designer and painter, and his brother Toribio, became Jesuit and missionary in China. One of his cousins was Dolores del Río. The family moved to Mexico City in 1913. He was engaged in modern theater projects in Mexico, he was founding member of the Teatro de Orientación, and he founded and organized the Escolares del Teatro group, Mexico City, in 1931, as well as the Trabajadores del Teatro group in 1933, and the Teatro de la Universidad in 1936. Bracho directed 50 films between 1941 and 1978. He also wrote 36 for films between 1941 and 1974.

From 1955 to 1957, he was married to actress Rosenda Monteros. In 1973 he was a member of the jury at the 8th Moscow International Film Festival.

Après l'attentat commis contre l'un de ses amis député et une violente altercation avec le général Jiménez, Chef du gouvernement, il modifie sa position. Ce qui lui vaut bientôt d'être arrêté par les fidèles du caudillo. Le général Elizondo, un de ses soutiens, organise son évasion. Toutefois, Aguirre finira par être trahi et sera assassiné sur la route de Toluca.

Sur ordre du gouverneur Vidal, un dirigeant syndical est assassiné au centre de tri postal de Mexico. Son compagnon, Octavio, parvient à s'échapper, mais il est néanmoins poursuivi... Il se réfugie dans un cinéma où il rencontre, par hasard, Julieta, une ancienne camarade dont il était épris. Elle parvient à le soustraire aux recherches de la police et l'abrite dans sa maison, où elle partage sa vie avec Ignacio, un écrivain raté. Octavio obtiendra sa collaboration pour récupérer des documents compromettants qu'il lui faut absolument supprimer. Au cours de ces heures inquiètes, l'amour réciproque de Julieta et d'Octavio refait surface.

A politician, Octavio, has discovered damaging information about the regional Governor who has recently crushed a strike at the urging of "foreign interests". Octavio is hunted by the Governor's bodyguards who wish to kill him and recover the documents he has stolen. While hiding in a cinema, Octavio bumps into Julieta who takes him home to hide. Julieta and her husband Ignacio are old friends of Octavio as they had been student activists together. Despite agreeing to help, Ignacio is resentful of Octavio because of the past relationship he had with Julieta. Octavio discovers that it is an unhappy marriage, Ignacio has a mistress while Julieta is forced to work as a taxi dancer in a cabaret to make ends meet.
