Juraj Herz (born 4 September 1934) is a Czech film director, actor, and scenic designer, born in Slovakia. He has directed for both film and television; in the latter capacity he has directed episodes of a joint French-Czech television series based on the Maigret novels of Georges Simenon. His 1971 film Petrolejové lampy, was entered into the 1972 Cannes Film Festival. His 1976 film Den pro mou lásku was entered into the 27th Berlin International Film Festival.
Herz is of Jewish origin.
En 1954, il entre à l'École supérieure des arts de la scène de Bratislava pour étudier la photographie. Il part étudier la mise en scène à l'académie de Prague des arts du spectacle (DAMU), où il reçoit les cours de direction de marionnettes de Jan Švankmajer. En 1960-1961, il travaille comme acteur et metteur en scène au théâtre Semafor. Il travaille ensuite comme assistant réalisateur aux studios Barrandov, notamment sur des films de Zbyněk Brynych, Transport du paradis et Neschovávejte se, když prší (1962). Il est également réalisateur adjoint sur le film Le Miroir aux alouettes (1965). Il joue aussi comme acteur dans quelques films des années 1960, comme Jo Limonade d'Oldřich Lipský, Dýmky de Vojtěch Jasný, ou des films de Jan Švankmajer.
Jaromil Jireš l'encourage à participer au projet collectif d'adaptation de nouvelles de Bohumil Hrabal, Les Petites Perles au fond de l'eau. Juraj Herz y réalise le court métrage Sběrné surovosti.
En 1968, il réalise son premier film pour lequel il a les mains entièrement libres : L'Incinérateur de cadavres, d'après un récit de Ladislav Fuks. Des scènes sont cependant coupées, puis, quand l'auteur et scénariste tombe en défaveur, le film est censuré. Après ce film a lieu la normalisation en Tchécoslovaquie. Il parvient d'abord à réaliser Sladké hry minulého léta, qui reçoit un bon accueil, puis Petrolejové lampy d'après un roman de Jaroslav Havlíček. Des scènes sont encore censurées, mais il apprécie de travailler avec l'actrice Iva Janžurová, avec qui il tourne son film suivant, Morgiana.
Après les difficultés qu'il rencontre à faire accepter le scénario de Den pro mou lásku, il se tourne vers l'adaptation de contes, qu'il fait cependant pencher vers le fantastique et l'horreur, comme La Belle et la Bête ou Le Neuvième Cœur d'après E. T. A. Hoffmann. Il adapte aussi un roman de Josef Nesvadba sous le titre Le Vampire de Ferat (Upír z Feratu).
En 1987, il part en Allemagne travailler pour la télévision. Il réalise d'autres contes, comme Le Roi Grenouille, et deux épisodes de la série télévisée Maigret. Il revient en République tchèque pour adapter un roman de Karel Pecka, Pasáž, en 1996. Il retrouve grâce à une coproduction franco-belge la même liberté que pour L'Incinérateur de cadavres.

During World War II, a mild-mannered Slovak carpenter Anton "Tóno" Brtko (Jozef Kroner) is offered the chance to take over the sewing notions store of an old, near-deaf Jewish woman Rozália Lautmannová (Ida Kamińska) as a part of the enactment of an Aryanization regulation in the town. As Tóno attempts to explain to Mrs. Lautmannová, who is oblivious of the world outside and generally confused, that he has come to be her supervisor and owner of the store, Imrich Kuchár (Martin Hollý, Sr.), a Slovak opponent of Aryanization, steps in and reveals to Brtko that the business itself is less than profitable, as Lautmannová herself relies on donations. The Jewish community then offers the amiable Brtko a weekly payment if he does not give up the store, which would otherwise be given to a new, possibly ruthless Aryanizer. Tóno accepts and lets Mrs. Lautmannová believe he is her nephew who has come to help in the store. Their relationship grows, until the authorities round up the town's entire Jewish population for transport, and Tóno finds himself conflicted as to whether he should turn in the senile Mrs. Lautmannová, or hide her. When the woman finally becomes aware of the "pogrom" all around her, she panics, and in attempting to silence her, Tóno accidentally kills her. The realization devastates him, and he hangs himself.

During the title sequence, the cast and crew are seen backstage preparing for their performance. The play depicts two mime-like magicians (who are portrayed by both costumed actors and Kuroko style puppets) named Mr. Edgar and Mr. Schwarzwald, trying to outdo each other by performing various stage tricks for the pleasure of an unseen audience. After each act, the two performers congratulate each other with a handshake. However, as tensions rise, the handshakes become less friendly and even violent. For his first trick, Edgar skins a fish by placing it inside his papier mache head; Schwarzwald one ups him by making a dog puppet perform various tricks on a tightrope; Edgar in turn grows several arms and begins playing various instruments simultaneously; Schwarzwald imitates this trick by growing several heads and juggling them; and Edgar causes several chairs to come alive and perform tricks at the crack of a whip. For the magicians' last trick, Edgar and Schwarzwald make themselves disappear by tearing each other to pieces.

In the frontier town of Stetson City, Arizona, in 1885, business is booming at the Trigger Whisky Saloon. Tornado Lou, the local chanteuse, regales the saloon-goers with a sultry ballad ("Když v báru housne dým"), while the saloon owner Doug Badman tries in vain to woo her. Two evangelists, Ezra Goodman and his daughter Winnifred, enter the bar attempting to drum up interest in their temperance movement, but the saloon's hard-drinking cowboys scorn them. Into the fracas steps a stranger: Lemonade Joe, a lone cowboy singing the praises of Kolaloka, a non-alcoholic soft drink (in Czech, limonàda, hence the name). His superior gunfighting skill quickly convinces the saloon-goers of the benefits of teetotalism. Before long, Joe and the Goodmans have joined forces, Joe has begun courting Winnifred, and all the cowboys in Stetson City have transferred their loyalty to the cathedral-like God Bless Kolaloka Saloon ("Arizóna, to je pravých mužů zóna").

Un général SS visite le camp de concentration de Terezín (Theresienstadt, près de Prague).
