After a short period as a journalist, he became a cinematographer in the early 1990s, working for about fifteen films in the Southern and Bollywood industries. In 2005, Anand turned film director with the critically acclaimed Kana Kandaen (2005) and rose to fame with his second film, Ayan (2009). Anand won the National Film Award for Best Cinematography for his debut film as a cinematographer, Thenmavin Kombath, in 1995. He is considered as the first one to use ramp shot in the country.

As a cinematographer, Anand is best known for his dynamic composition, lighting techniques and the ability to tell stories through visual images.

He describes 'sahana' song from the movie Sivaji as the most difficult one in his career. The whole set was made of glass. He covered himself with black bed sheets and took great care that his reflections didn't fall on the glass.
