Après que son grand-père s'est blessé dans un accident de voiture, Isabelle, jeune fille obstinée, et sa famille se retrouvent dans la maison historique de la famille en Hollande. The film is set in May 1940 in and around the city of Rotterdam, where the young bakers assistant (and aspiring amateur boxer) Vincent de Graaf meets the wealthy Eva von Heerle, the daughter of German refugees who've fled Nazi Germany. Eva is engaged to Dirk Lagerwaard, a wealthy older industrial whom she does not love, whereas Vincent wants to emigrate to the United States to find a cure for his sick brother. The two fall in love. As German troops invade the Netherlands, Vincent offers Dirk to bring Eva and her parents to Rotterdam resulting in a dangerous journey through the frontlines as Dutch and German troops clash in bitter combat. As the two reach Rotterdam, an ultimatum is delivered to the Dutch troops defending the city in which they are summoned to surrender immediately or face destruction, the Dutch soldiers refuse and Rotterdam is bombed, changing the future for everyone involved.

Akkie (Hanna Obbeek) is a 6th grader that absolutely adores soccer and can't wait until the school tournament at the end of the year. Her classmate Joep (Nils Verkooijen) makes fun of her for this in the hopes of catching her attention, as he has a crush on Akkie. Things take a turn for the tragic when Akkie discovers that she has leukemia. Despite this, Akkie tries to keep herself busy by helping to prepare for the upcoming soccer tournament. Her friends are supportive, but Akkie grows despondent when she has to spend several days in the hospital. Akkie grows progressively weaker until one day she finds that she cannot play with her classmates as she once did, making it necessary for Joep to discreetly help cover for her when she climbs a tree and can't climb down on her own.
