Snàporaz (Marcello Mastroianni) wakes up during a train ride and has a brief fling with a woman in the bathroom, but it's cut short when the train suddenly stops and the woman gets off. Snàporaz follows her into the woods, through the wilderness and into a Grand Hotel overrun with women in attendance for a surrealistic feminist convention. He winds up in a conference about polyandry, where his presence is rejected. A frightened Snàporaz retreats to the hotel lobby, but the exit is blocked; instead he seeks refuge with a girl who offers her assistance, Donatella (Donatella Damiani), inside an elevator.

The film opens in a small South Texas bordertown in the 1850s. A poor farmer and his young son arrive into the settlement where the farmer confronts Luke Fletcher (Donald O'Brien), a thieving henchman employed by wealthy land baron Richard Barrett. The man complains to Fletcher that he had been cheated by Barrett claiming he had been sold a deed to non-existent property. Fletcher finally shoots the farmer, killing the man in front of his young son, and begins laughing. His son then picks up his father's gun, uses it to kill Fletcher, and rides out of town with Fletcher's horse and a distinctive silver-trimmed saddle.

Après le braquage sanglant d'une banque, trois malfrats, menés par Aldo, s'enfuient en voiture pour trouver rapidement une planque avant la mise en place de barrages de police. Lorsque le véhicule tombe en panne, ils sont contraints de se réfugier dans une villa en bord de mer qu'ils pensent vide. Mais elle est occupée par une nonne, sœur Christina, ses cinq élèves en pleine répétition de la pièce de théâtre Le Songe d'une nuit d'été de William Shakespeare et une femme de ménage. En attendant l'arrivée du bus scolaire censé récupérer les filles, qu'ils veulent voler pour continuer leur fuite, les trois braqueurs se livrent aux pires exactions envers leurs otages. Après avoir tué la bonne à coups de fer à repasser, ils violent la nonne et certaines élèves avant d'en abattre une. Assoiffées de vengeance, sœur Christina et les autres victimes se vengent d'eux en les assassinant un par un.

En 1946, Marco prend du bon temps et navigue sur le Lac Majeur. Lors d'une escale il se fait aborder par Maître Orimbelli qui semble s'ennuyer. Ce dernier l'invite à dîner chez lui et lui présente sa femme irascible et sa belle-sœur Matilde, dont le mari est mort à la guerre. Orimbelli insiste pour que Marco reste dormir dans la plus belle chambre de la villa : la chambre de l'évêque. Le lendemain, Marco, qui doit aller rejoindre Charlotte, une amie, trouve Orimbelli qui l'attend sur son bateau. Celui-ci, jouant l'apitoiement, lui force la main pour profiter du voyage. Marco cède. Il ne tardera pas à découvrir qu'Orimbelli est prêt à tout pour arriver à ses fins avec les femmes qui passent à sa portée.
