Karl Brown (December 26, 1896 – March 25, 1990) was a pioneer American cinematographer who had a close association with director D. W. Griffith during the early part of his career. Brown also became a noteworthy director and screenwriter.
Dès 1916 et durant la période du muet exclusivement, il est directeur de la photographie sur une trentaine de films, le dernier étant Mannequin (avec Alice Joyce et Warner Baxter) de James Cruze, autre réalisateur avec lequel il collabore souvent, notamment pour le western La Caravane vers l'Ouest (1923, avec J. Warren Kerrigan et Lois Wilson).
Devenu membre de l'American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) en 1919, il en est le vice-président en 1924 et 1925.
Karl Brown entame ensuite une seconde carrière de réalisateur (douze films à partir de 1927, les quatre derniers en 1938, dont Port of Missing Girls , avec Harry Carey et Judith Allen) et de scénariste (trente-six films de 1927 à 1953, dont Port of Missing Girls précité).
Il est également scénariste à la télévision américaine, sur trois séries, les deux premières en 1956 ; la dernière est Les Aventuriers du Far West (trois épisodes, 1959-1960), après quoi il se retire.
En 1973, il publie une autobiographie titrée Adventures with D. W. Griffith.

De 1914 à 1919, Karl Brown assiste le chef opérateur G. W. Bitzer et le réalisateur D. W. Griffith, principalement comme cadreur, sur une quinzaine de films muets américains, dont Home, Sweet Home (1914, où il apparaît comme violoniste), Intolérance (1916, où il est crédité chef opérateur associé de Bitzer) et Le Lys brisé (1919), tous trois avec Lillian Gish.Dès 1916 et durant la période du muet exclusivement, il est directeur de la photographie sur une trentaine de films, le dernier étant Mannequin (avec Alice Joyce et Warner Baxter) de James Cruze, autre réalisateur avec lequel il collabore souvent, notamment pour le western La Caravane vers l'Ouest (1923, avec J. Singing cowboy and rodeo star Gene Autry (Gene Autry) inherits half interest of a ranch and mining property from his late foster father, Henry "Dad" Erwin. The other half is left to Dad's niece, Barbara Erwin (Carol Hughes) who arrives at the ranch from the East with her friend, Kitty Callahan (Pauline Drake). The will stipulates that each has an "undivided interest" in the inheritance—that each owns half of everything—and that nothing can be sold off without the approval of the other. In desperate need of money, Barbara expresses her desire to sell the mine as quickly as possible. Gene, however, wants to continue Dad's work on the mine, which employs Mexican rancheros whose land was ruined by dust storms. He explains that although the profits are currently put back into operations, eventually the mine will provide her with an income, and that without the mine, the rancheros will not survive.
