Kazunori Itō (伊藤 和典, Itō Kazunori, born December 24, 1954) is a Japanese anime screenwriter and artist who is well known for his work in the .hack Franchise and his writing for the Ghost in the Shell movie. Itō also provided the art for .hack//Another Birth. He is a member of the artist group known as Headgear.

The Digital World have become so overpopulated that the super computer, Yggdrasil, that governed the Digital World could no longer handle it. His solution was to destroy the majority of Digimon with the X-Program. A very small percentage were to be moved to a new Digital World as he planned to destroy the old. Those who had not been chosen but were able to escape into the new world obtained a rare gift known as X-Antibody, a substance once activated alters the appearance and strength of the digimon. The Royal Knights are thus ordered by Yggdrasil for these digimon to be eliminated.

In an alternate universe, people are addicted to an illegal simulation video game called Avalon. Despite its popularity, the game can leave a player catatonic. One player in the game, Ash (Małgorzata Foremniak), is a very skilled warrior that plays solo in her missions. After completing one of her missions, Ash cashes in her winnings for ammo and currency, whereas the Game Master (Władysław Kowalski) tells her that playing alone is more dangerous on the next level, and he wants her to consider joining a party. Three years have passed since Gamera defeated the Legion, and the world is once again plagued by the Gyaos, which have evolved into Hyper Gyaos. A year has passed since the battle between Gamera and the Gyaos, and Japan has struggled to rebuild its cities in the meantime. A ship carrying plutonium collides with a floating atoll off the eastern coast of the Philippines, one of many incidents occurring throughout the area. As the anomalous formation approaches Japan, a team of scientists led by Naoya Kusanagi (Akira Onodera) discover orihalcum amulets and a stone slab covered in Etrurian runes on the atoll. During the investigation, the atoll suddenly quakes, destroying the slab and throwing the scientists into the ocean.
