Ken Uehara (上原謙, Uehara Ken, 7 November 1909 – 23 November 1991) was a Japanese film actor. He appeared in more than 200 films between 1935 and 1990. He starred in Entotsu no mieru basho, which was entered into the 3rd Berlin International Film Festival.

His son is the singer and actor Yūzō Kayama.

Tokyo, 1926. Kinuyo Tanaka, sa mère Yae, son oncle Gentarō, ses deux frères Shozo et Haruji et sa sœur Tamayo s'installent dans leur nouvelle maison suite au transfert de l'actrice des studios Shimokamo de la Shōchiku situés à Kyoto à ceux de Kamata à Tokyo. Ce transfert a pu se faire grâce à l'influence de Hiroshi Shimizu qui couve la jeune actrice d'un œil protecteur. Kinuyo entretient sa famille grâce à son salaire d'actrice. Sa mère lui a demandé de ne pas adopter de nom de scène et de garder son véritable nom dans le secret espoir que sa notoriété permette de retrouver son frère ainé, Ryosuke, qui a disparu dix ans plus tôt après s'être soustrait à la conscription.

The year is 1980, and the film opens with the launch of the JX-1 Hayabusa spaceship into outer space. The ship, originally sent to collect data on Saturn, has its course diverted to investigate the mysterious star Gorath, reported as being 6000 times the size of the Earth. It is feared that the star's path could come dangerously close to Earth. The JX-1 reaches locates Gorath and it's much smaller than earth but with 6000 times the gravity. The JX-1 radio's back any data about the star but gets sucked into the star's gravitational field which drags the ship into Gorath, incinerating it.

Kin, the first of the geisha, is consumed by the idea of wealth. As a moneylender, she is an embittered businesswoman who is insistent upon being repaid by her former geisha sisters, Tamae and Tomi. She is the love interest of a former soldier in Manchuria, Seki, who was sent to jail after trying to commit suicide with her many years ago. He returns to try to borrow money from her, but is quickly turned away. In the end, he is sent back to jail for a money-related crime. Kin then becomes excited when she hears that Tabe, her former patron and lover, is returning. However, she becomes furious after realizing that he does not love her, but rather just wants to borrow her money as well. She kicks him out and burns his photograph to erase his memory. In the end, she leaves the city on a search for property to buy.

Shûichi Ogata, marié à Kikuko, vit avec elle chez ses parents. Il travaille également dans l'entreprise que dirige son père. Les rapports entre les quatre personnes - la mère, le père, le fils et la bru - sont plutôt compliqués et ambigus. Le fils délaisse et trompe son épouse avec Kinuko qu'il compare à un « torrent », alors que sa femme serait « semblable à un lac ». Shingo, le père, adore, quant à lui, sa bru pour laquelle il multiplie amabilités et prévenances, provoquant la jalousie dissimulée de Yasuko, sa propre femme. Pourtant, alors qu'il accompagne Kikuko, qui prétexte se rendre à l'hôpital pour visiter une amie, il déclare qu'elle et Shûishi feraient mieux d'avoir leur propre logement. Plus tard, Shûichi révèle à son père que Kikuko s'est rendue à l'hôpital afin de se faire avorter, parce qu'elle refusait d'avoir un enfant de lui. Une violente dispute s'ensuit entre Shingo et son fils. Après de vaines démarches auprès de la maîtresse de Shûichi, Shingo rentre chez lui en état d'ivresse. Il reçoit enfin un appel téléphonique de Kikuko, sa bru, qui lui donne rendez-vous au Parc impérial. Là, au cours d'une scène émouvante, Shingo demande à Kikuko de réfléchir avant de prendre la décision de quitter son fils. Puis, il annonce sa volonté de se retirer avec sa femme dans leur maison de campagne afin d'y attendre paisiblement la mort.
