The Japanese version is told in flashbacks framed by scenes of a reporter questioning the expedition after they have returned from their harrowing ordeal in the mountains. Five young friends, university students, have come to the Japanese Alps during New Year's for a skiing vacation. Among them are Takashi Iijima (Akira Takarada) his girlfriend Machiko Takeno (Momoko Kochi) and her brother Nakada (Sachio Sakai). The other members of the group are their friends, Gen and Kaji.

The film begins with two bedraggled peasants, Tahei and Matashichi (Minoru Chiaki and Kamatari Fujiwara). Through conversation, they reveal that they had intended to fight alongside the Yamana clan, but turned up too late, were taken for soldiers of the defeated Akizuki clan, and forced to bury the dead. After quarreling and splitting up, the two are both captured again and forced to dig for gold in the Akizuki castle with other prisoners.

Generals Miki and Washizu are Samurai commanders under a local lord, Lord Tsuzuki, who reigns in the castle of the Spider's Web Forest. After defeating the lord's enemies in battle, they return to Tsuzuki's castle. On their way through the thick forest surrounding the castle, they meet a spirit, who foretells their future. The spirit tells them that today Washizu will be named Lord of the Northern Garrison and Miki will now be commander of the first fortress. She then foretells that Washizu will eventually become Lord of Spiderweb Castle, and finally she tells Miki that his son will also become lord of the castle.

American reporter, Steve Martin (Raymond Burr), is brought to a hospital with dozens of maimed and wounded citizens. Takezo (Musashi) abandons his life as a knight errant. He's sought as a teacher and vassal by Shogun, Japan's most powerful clan leader. He's also challenged to fight by the supremely confident and skillful Sasaki Kojiro. Takezo agrees to fight Kojiro in a year's time but rejects Shogun's patronage, choosing instead to live on the edge of a village, raising vegetables. He's followed there by Otsu and later by Akemi, both in love with him. The year ends as Takezo assists the villagers against a band of brigands. He seeks Otsu's forgiveness and accepts her love, then sets off across the water to Ganryu Island for his final contest.

Following Takezo's (Toshiro Mifune) capture by the Buddhist priest Takuan Sōhō, and stay in Himeji Castle. Takezo is granted his samurai name 'Musashi Miyamoto.' and leaves to search for enlightenment, leaving two messages for Otsu: "Soon I will be back" and "Forgive me." He goes to learn the way of the samurai and find those who will help him learn. But his first duel is with a challenger with a chain and a sickle who he fights and wins. After years on the road establishing his reputation as Japan's greatest fencer, Takezo travels to Kyoto. The now married Matahachi and Oko are settled there with Akemi. Otsu, having heard a rumor that Takezo is in Kyoto, has also travelled there to look for him. He meets Otsu who is in love with him but he tells Otsu he must follow what he loves more than her, the sword of the samurai.

When the Japanese freighter Eiko-maru is destroyed near Odo Island, the Bingo-maru is sent to investigate, only to meet the same fate with few survivors. A fishing boat from Odo is also destroyed, with one survivor. Fishing catches mysteriously drop to zero, blamed by an elder on the ancient sea creature known as "Godzilla". Reporters arrive on Odo Island to further investigate. A villager tells one of the reporters that "something large is going crazy down there" ruining the fishing. That evening, a ritual dance to appease Godzilla is held during which the reporter learns that the locals used to sacrifice young girls. That night, a large storm strikes the island, destroying the reporters' helicopter, and an unseen force destroys 17 homes, kills nine persons and 20 of the villagers' livestock.

Isamu Nakahara, un petit salarié taciturne est muté dans une succursale de sa compagnie à Tokyo. Il s'établit provisoirement avec sa femme Kikuko chez ses beaux-parents mais doivent rapidement trouver un logement car la maison est trop exiguë, d'autant que le frère de Kikuko qui tient le commerce familial va bientôt se marier et accueillir sa future femme. En désespoir de cause, n'ayant pas les moyens de s'offrir un logement en propre, ils s'établissent chez Takemura, un collègue d'Isamu qui vient de perdre sa femme. Kikuko se comporte d'une manière qu'elle juge respectueuse envers leur hôte, s'occupant de lui lorsqu'il tombe malade et lui préparant ses repas. Peu à peu, un sentiment de jalousie s'installe chez Isamu qui se renferme de plus en plus sur lui-même tandis que Takemura retrouve entrain et joie de vivre.

Japon, automne 1573. Le Château d'Odani du clan Azai est assiégé par l'armée d'Oda Nobunaga. Trois soldats du camp assiégé connaissent des fortunes diverses. Sasa Hayatenosuke ne peut se résoudre à faillir à son devoir malgré les suppliques de Kano, la femme qu'il aime. Hayatenosuke promet de tout faire pour survivre à l'affrontement à venir et confie Kano à Tachibana Jurota un soldat un peu couard qui ne veut pas mourir au combat et tous deux s’enfuient du château la nuit précédent la bataille décisive. Le lendemain l'armée du clan Azai est défaite, Kagami Yakeiji est fait prisonnier mais parvient à tuer son geôlier et à s'enfuir. Sasa Hayatenosuke est quant à lui blessé au combat. Il est recueilli et soigné par Oryo, qui avec son père est à la tête d'une bande de pillards qui dépouille les soldats tués au combat.
