Laurent Cantet is a French director, born on June 15, 1961 at Melle, Deux-Sèvres. His parents were schoolteachers in Ardilleux.

His film L'Emploi du temps was placed at 99 on Slant Magazine's best films of the 2000s, number 9 of The Guardian's Best Films of the Noughties, and number 11 at The AV Club's top 50 films of the 00s.

On 25 May 2008, he received the Palme d'Or at the Festival de Cannes 2008, for the movie Entre les murs.

Biography

Fils d'instituteurs à Ardilleux (Deux-Sèvres), il obtient une maîtrise d'audiovisuel à Marseille, puis intègre l'IDHEC en 1984, où il se lie d'amitié avec de futurs cinéastes tels Dominik Moll, Vincent Dietschy ou encore Gilles Marchand, qui l'engagera comme chef-opérateur sur son premier court métrage, L'Étendu (1987). Entretemps, il décroche le diplôme de la prestigieuse école, avec un film de fin d'études intitulé Chercheurs d'or.

Le 25 mai 2008, il est primé de la Palme d'or lors du 61e Festival de Cannes, pour son film Entre les murs.

En 2010, il se mobilise pour la cause des travailleurs sans-papiers en grève aux côtés de nombreux cinéastes et artistes.

En novembre 2015, Laurent Cantet participe aux côtés de Cédric Klapisch, Pascale Ferran et Alain Rocca, à la création et au lancement de LaCinetek, 1 plateforme de VOD dédiée au cinéma de patrimoine.
