A baby is found abandoned inside a coin locker at Western Seoul train station in 1996. A beggar takes her and names her Il-young, then when she turns 10, she is sold off to a woman referred to simply as Mother. Mother is the boss of a loan shark and organ trafficking crime ring in Chinatown, Incheon; she has held on to her position of power by being dispassionate and calculating, and by keeping by her side only those of use to her. Mother raises the young child, eventually grooming her for a position in her organization. By the time Il-young is 18 years old, she has become Mother's trusted right hand. One day, Il-young is given a task: to get close to Suk-hyun, the son of a debtor. Over the course of a few days, she becomes friends with the boy and is exposed to a world she never knew existed. She envies the normalcy that other teenage girls enjoy and opens her heart to Suk-hyun. But when his father flees, Mother orders her to kill Suk-hyun. Il-young cannot go through with it and by making that single choice, she must now flee from the only family she has ever known.

With their municipality scheduled to be flooded to make way for the construction of a new dam, the devout denizens of a rural village have placed their faith in Choi Gyeong-seok, a church elder who promises to relocate the flock. Choi tells the villagers they will build a church and a new housing development where they will all be able to live together after the town is completely submerged. He also says that only 144,000 people can go to heaven, and that church offerings are mandatory if one wants to "secure their spot." Even the town's much-revered Reverend Sung, a young and good-looking minister who seemingly has the ability to heal the sick, approves of Choi's plans. Behind his guise of devotion, however, Choi is a practiced con man posing as a representative of a fake religion; his true aim is to defraud the villagers of their resettlement compensation. The only obstacle to the scheme is Kim Min-chul, a skeptical outcast who accidentally discovers evidence of Choi's past misdeeds and suddenly finds himself becoming the center of resistance against the church institution.

Pendant une froide journée d'hiver, Sun-yeong, une jeune femme enceinte, effectue un long trajet en taxi vers sa ville natale où vit sa mère et où elle va accoucher. Un auto-stoppeur avec une casquette de baseball, étrange et impoli, partage le taxi avec elle et le chauffeur de taxi. Il prétend tout connaitre d'elle et du chauffeur de taxi, raconte des insanités et entame un étrange compte à rebours, suivi d’un flash, un bruit assourdissant, puis le néant… . Quand il arrive à zéro, le taxi s’arrête et ils perdent connaissance. À son réveil, Sun-yeong est seule, réalise qu’il n’y a plus d’électricité et que des grognements effrayants émanent des bois.
