Biography

Richards was born in Toronto, Ontario, but was raised in Detroit, Michigan. His father, a Jamaican carpenter turned auto-industry worker, died when Richards was nine years old. Soon after, his mother lost her eyesight, he and his brother Allan kept the family together. He later went on to study law at Wayne University where instead he found his way in theatrical arts after a brief break during World War II while serving in the U.S. Army Air Force.

Among Richards' accomplishments are his staging the original production of Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun, debuting on Broadway to standing ovations on 11 March 1959, and in 1984 he introduced August Wilson to Broadway in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom.

As head of the National Playwrights Conference at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center, he helped develop the careers of Wendy Wasserstein, Christopher Durang, Lee Blessing and David Henry Hwang.

Richards died of heart failure on his eighty-seventh birthday in New York City.

Mr. Richards also taught Moscow Art Theatre acting technique under Paul Mann at the Actor's Workshop in New York alongside Morris Carnovsky.

Boy Willie (Charles S. Dutton) and his friend Lymon (Courtney B. Vance) travel from Mississippi to Pittsburgh, where he wishes his sister Berniece (Alfre Woodard) to give him the family's heirloom piano so that he can sell it to buy land from Mr. Sutter (Tim Hartman), a descendent of the family that once owned Willy's own ancestors as slaves. The piano itself had at one time belonged to the wife of the original Sutter, the white former owner of their family... and decades earlier, Berniece and Willy Boy's grandfather had, at the slave master's instructions, carved the black family's African tribal history and American slave history into the piano's surface.

Ken is a young infantry lieutenant who leads his platoon through an embattled European town, and advances into an open square and a shot rings out. He is hit in the lower back and in an instant a robust young man is made paraplegic for the rest of his life. In the hospital, Ken is a sullen and resentful patient, and in feeling sorry for himself he finds no sympathy from his fellow paraplegics, including Norm, a bitter and caustic man, and Leo, a happy go lucky patient who smokes cigars and bets on horses. Ken's reluctance to respond to treatment begins to diminish through the persistence of his fiancée, Ellen, who refuses to give up, despite his wish that she do so. With the support too, of Brock, a sympathetic doctor, Ken begins to tackle the program of adjustment. He decides to go through with the wedding, determined to take the vows standing up at the altar. The wedding night however is painful for him and he returns to the hospital. Later, he is involved in a drunk driving accident and is disciplined by his fellow patients. Eventually Ken comes to appreciate that he has responsibilities, especially to his wife, who is also faced with the problems of being married to a paraplegic, a course she has accepted with full knowledge and considerable courage.
