Three ex-G.I.s, Ted Riley (Kelly), Doug Hallerton (Dailey) and Angie Valentine (Kidd) have served in World War II together and become best friends. Sach is punched in the nose by Herbie, a local kid who the boys know, and acquires the ability to read people's minds. Slip sees this as an opportunity to buy a detective agency and their first client is a beautiful blonde who is trying to escape from her connections with mobsters. She leaves behind a stolen mink coat and an envelope that would incriminate the mobsters. The mobsters, trying to get the envelope back, kidnap Herbie in the hopes to persuade the boys to return the envelope. Slip and Sach, after being tipped off where Herbie is being held, go there in disguise. They foil the mobsters plans and rescue Herbie.

A cargo plane leaves Peru, bound for Panama with two passengers during a storm. When one of the two pilots goes to check on an opened door, Charles Hasso (Marc Krah) claims he tried but failed to prevent the other passenger from jumping to his death. Christopher "Chris" Cross (Edward G. Robinson), a meek amateur painter and cashier for clothing retailer, J.J. Hogarth & Company, is fêted by his employer, honoring him for twenty-five years of dull, repetitive service. Hogarth presents him with a watch and kind words, then leaves getting into a car with a beautiful young blonde. Walking home through Greenwich Village, Chris muses to an associate, "I wonder what it's like to be loved by a young girl." He helps Kitty (Joan Bennett), an amoral fast-talking femme fatale, apparently being attacked by a man, stunning the assailant with his umbrella. Chris is unaware that the attacker was Johnny (Dan Duryea), Kitty's brutish boyfriend, and sees her safely to her apartment building.
