Luigi Lo Cascio (born 20 October 1967) is an Italian actor. He won David di Donatello as Best actor for his starring role in I cento passi. In 2012 he debuted as film director and writer with La città ideale.

Biography

Luigi Lo Cascio se lance dans des études de médecine avec l'intention de devenir psychiatre. Il se produit ensuite avec une troupe d'acteurs de rue à Palerme, décroche en 1989 un rôle dans une pièce de théâtre et débute alors une tournée à travers l'Italie.

Il s'inscrit à l'École d'Art Dramatique Silvio D'Amico et obtient, après diverses prestations théatrales, le rôle de Peppino Impastato dans le film Les Cent pas (I Cento Passi). Sa prestation lui vaut le Prix David di Donatello du meilleur acteur.

Ces premiers succès lui permettent d'apparaître dans différentes productions, dont la plus remarquée est Nos meilleures années (La Meglio Gioventù), film produit par la RAI et d'une durée de plus de 6 heures.

Au début des années 1980, une guerre interne fait rage au sein de Cosa nostra. Menacé, Tommaso Buscetta, membre important de la mafia palermitaine, se réfugie sous un faux nom au Brésil, pays dont sa femme est originaire, mais il est arrêté par la police brésilienne, puis extradé en Italie. Sa famille (notamment deux de ses fils) et ses alliés continuant d'être décimés par le clan des Corléonais, il décide de collaborer avec la justice, représentée par le juge Giovanni Falcone. En brisant l'omertà, il devient un traître, mais sauve sa vie, se venge et permet au juge Falcone auquel il fait de nombreuses révélations sur l'organisation et les crimes de Cosa nostra de lutter contre elle. Cette coopération aboutit quelques années plus tard au Maxi-Procès de Palerme qui voit la condamnation de plusieurs centaines de mafieux.

Salvatore Granata is a rather poor man who lives with his wife, son and daughter in Calabria in Italy. Rocco meets Helena, the daughter of the local grocer shop. However, the man is a racist and forbids his daughter to play with Italian boys.
