Luis Alberni (October 4, 1886 – December 23, 1962) was a Spanish-born American character actor in American films.

Biography

Alberni was born in Barcelona, Spain. He majored in acting while attending the University of Madrid. In order to pursue his acting career further, he determined to emigrate to the United States and, in April 1912, he sailed to New York as a steerage passenger aboard the S/S Nieuw Amsterdam. In New York, he acted on both stage and screen. His first motion picture performance was in the 1915 Jewish drama, Children of the Ghetto. On the stage, he appeared in more than a dozen Broadway plays between 1915 and 1928, including,39 East, Dreams for Sale and the original production of What Price Glory? in 1924-25. In the sound film era, he had notable roles as Jacopo in The Count of Monte Cristo, which starred Robert Donat, and as the mayor in A Bell for Adano. He died at the motion picture actors' home in Woodland Hills, California in 1962. His remains are interred at Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery.

Upon the United States entry into World War I, the first American units to arrive at the front in France are veteran Marine companies, one of which is commanded by captain Flagg, along with his Lieutenants, Moore and Aldrich. Flagg has developed a romantic relationship with the daughter of the local innkeeper, Charmaine, and resumes their relationship after returning from the front. However, he lies to her and tells her he is married when she wants to come with him on his leave to Paris. Replacements arrive and their lack of discipline and knowledge infuriate the Captain. But he is expecting the arrival of a new top sergeant, who he hopes will be able to train them properly. However, when the sergeant arrives, it is Quirt, Captain Flagg's long time rival, a rivalry which quickly re-ignites.

William "Bill" Kluggs (Dan Dailey) is the first in his hometown of Punxatawney, West Virginia, to enlist in the Army Air Forces after the attack on Pearl Harbor, making his father Herman (William Demarest), mother Gertrude (Evelyn Varden) and girlfriend Marge Fettles (Colleen Townsend) proud. The whole town sees him off. Willie tries to become a pilot but washes out, although he proves to be so proficient at aerial gunnery that, rather than being sent to Europe to fight, he is made an instructor and assigned to a base near his hometown. After two years in the same place, he is branded a coward by the townsfolk, even though he continually requests a transfer into combat.

Two truck drivers from Brooklyn travel to Mexico to deliver an elephant named "Bunny", but they have lost the address of where Bunny is to be delivered to. Adopting the elephant as their own, the two stumble into a traveling carnival headed by Alberto Cordoba and his daughter Nita. The carnival is destitute and menaced by loan sharks.
