Charles Dickens' Immortal Story of a Young Man's Journey to Maturity. This version finds David Copperfield (Robin Phillips) as a young man, brooding on a deserted beach. In flashback, David remembers his life in 19th century England, as a young orphan, brought to London and passed around from relatives, to guardians, to boarding school. He relives his struggle to overcome the loss of his idyllic childhood and the torment inflicted by his hated step-father after his mother’s death. Then virtually abandoned on the streets of Victorian London, David Copperfield is flung into manhood and contends bravely with the perils of big-city corruption and vice; hardships which ultimately fuel his triumph as a talented and successful writer.

Hayley Mills plays a seventeen-year-old girl, Brydie White, in a village in the West Country of England. Brydie suffers arrested development after her involvement in a shooting accident. Though physically mature, she retains the mentality and social connections of a teenager and a fascination with dead animals and burial. Believing that she will be unable to survive without her dying mother, the townsfolk fear commitment to an institution is inevitable. Her involvement with a young gypsy man, Roibin Krisenki (played by Ian McShane in one of his earliest film roles) and later personal loss manage to at least partly resolve these mental issues.

They are overheard by their company commander Captain Stone. The Captain speaks with Welsh privately and tells him that he witnessed Doll hand Welsh the reports. Welsh replies that he knew he did but that war is insanity and the only way the men can survive the upcoming battle is to live with that fact. Welsh and Doll continue to be at odds with each other over Doll's independent thinking that extends to his stealing a pistol from another soldier that he thinks will give him an edge in surviving.
