Margaret Morris (November 7, 1898 – June 7, 1968) was an American film actress of the silent film era, and into the 1930s.

Morris, born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, was the great-niece to former US President Benjamin Harrison. She became interested in acting by her late teens, and moved to Hollywood to pursue an acting career. At 22 she starred in her first film, the 1920 movie Her First Elopement. Her career went on a fast track from there, with her starring in eleven films through 1924, which included the 1923 film The Ghost City opposite Pete Morrison, and The Galloping Ace opposite Jack Hoxie in 1924.

Also in 1924, she was one of thirteen girls selected as "WAMPAS Baby Stars", a list that included future Hollywood legend Clara Bow and Elinor Fair. She would star in another twenty eight films through 1929, and was at the height of her career. However, like many early film stars, she did not transition well with the advent of sound films. In 1932 she starred opposite Tom Tyler in Single-Handed Sanders, a western. She would have several B-movie roles, mostly uncredited, from 1932 to 1937. Her last film was The Toast of New York, an uncredited role, in 1937.

She retired from acting that same year, but remained in Los Angeles. She died there on June 7, 1968, aged 69.

Biography

Alice Adams (Katharine Hepburn) is the youngest daughter of the Adams family. Her father (Fred Stone) is an invalid employed as a clerk in a factory owned by Mr. Lamb (Charles Grapewin), who has kept Adams on salary for years despite his lengthy illness. Her mother (Ann Shoemaker) is embittered by her husband's lack of ambition and upset by the snubs her daughter endures because of their poverty. Alice's older brother, Walter (Frank Albertson), is a gambler who cannot hold a job and who associates with African Americans (which, given the time period in which the film is set, is considered a major social embarrassment). As the film begins, Alice attends a dance given by the wealthy Henrietta Lamb (Janet McLeod). She has no date, and is escorted to the occasion by Walter. Alice is a social climber like her mother, and engages in socially inappropriate behavior and conversation in an attempt to impress others. At the dance, Alice meets wealthy Arthur Russell (Fred MacMurray), who is charmed by her despite her poverty.

The story is told in 15 episodes which Universal advertised as: Laid aboard ship and on a mysterious island in the South Seas, the picture plot admitted of romantic and suspenseful handling. The action includes much jungle stuff and adventures on the part of the leading characters in which wild animals figure. These punch scenes include fights with lions, alligators, elephants and other jungle denizens. Especial pains were taken at Universal City, which boasts the best menagerie in the film industry, to inject real suspense and dangerous situations into the animal sequences. The sea sequences also were made with an eye to the outdoing of all previous serial thrills. Under-water fights, shark fights, submarine adventures and other aquatic thrills figure in many of the fifteen episodes of the serial.
