Margaret Seddon (November 18, 1872 – April 17, 1968) was an American film actress. She appeared in 104 films between 1915 and 1951, including Frank Capra's Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936). She was born in Washington, D.C. and died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Biography

Marguerite Hungerford Whiteley Sloan entame sa carrière d'actrice au théâtre en prenant le nom de scène Margaret Seddon, notamment dans le répertoire du vaudeville. Elle joue à Broadway (New York) dans deux pièces, représentées respectivement en 1911 et 1913-1914.

Au cinéma, elle débute dans deux films sortis en 1915. Elle contribue à une cinquantaine d'autres films muets américains jusqu'en 1928, dont Sonny d'Henry King (1922, avec Richard Barthelmess et Pauline Garon) et Fraternité de King Vidor (1925, avec Eleanor Boardman et Harrison Ford).

Puis elle apparaît dans une cinquantaine de films parlants à partir de 1929, dont L'Extravagant Mr. Deeds de Frank Capra (1936, avec Gary Cooper et Jean Arthur) et Mon secrétaire travaille la nuit de Mitchell Leisen (1942, avec Rosalind Russell et Fred MacMurray). Son avant-dernier film est House by the River de Fritz Lang (1950, avec Louis Hayward et Jane Wyatt). Le dernier est un western sorti en 1951 et il n'en eu pas de suivant.

A British agent carrying a vital document is murdered on his way to deliver it in the USA. Holmes deduces he was carrying the document in the form of microfilm and goes to Washington with Watson to find the killer and retrieve the document before it falls into the hands of an "international spy ring". Before his death, the agent managed to pass the microfilm into the unwitting hands of a Washington debutante and bride-to-be. There are some amusing moments when the microfilm, which has been inserted into a "V for Victory" matchbook, gets passed from hand to hand at a party unknowingly, and at one point is discarded by the chief criminal. Holmes and Watson track down the criminals, rescue the bride-to-be and regain the microfilm.

The film opens in 1482 with King Louis XI and his close advisor, Frollo, the King's Chief Justice of Paris, in a printing shop. A.J. Raffles, the celebrated cricketer, is welcomed in the parlours and country estates of high society.
