Mari Törőcsik (born 23 November 1935) is a Hungarian film actress. She has appeared in over 120 films since 1956. She won the award for Best Actress at the 1976 Cannes Film Festival for the film Mrs. Dery Where Are You?

Biography

Mari Törőcsik est diplômée de la Színház- és Filmművészeti Főiskola (École supérieure d'art dramatique et cinématographique) de Budapest en 1958.

Elle est lancée grâce à Un petit carrousel de fête (Körhinta, 1956) de Zoltán Fábri, présenté à Cannes.

À Cannes en 1971, elle a obtenu une mention spéciale dans la catégorie Un Certain Regard pour son interprétation dans Szerelem (Amour) de Károly Makk.

Elle a remporté le prix d'interprétation féminine au Festival de Cannes 1976 pour le rôle de Déryné dans Où êtes-vous madame Déry ? (Déryné, hol van ?) de Gyula Maár et a été nommée Acteur de la nation hongroise.

The 19th-century patriarch of the Hungarian-Jewish Sonnenschein family is a tavern owner, who distills and makes his own popular liquor in Austria-Hungary. From the recipe, the liquor, called "Taste of Sunshine," is commercially made by the next generation of the family who gain great wealth and prestige from the business. That generation of the family lives many happy and privileged years and the children are highly educated. The oldest son, Ignatz (the first of 3 generational roles played by Ralph Fiennes), a fast rising judge, falls in love and has an affair with his first cousin, Valerie (Jennifer Ehle), against his father's wishes. The second son, Gustave (James Frain), becomes a medical doctor. Ignatz is asked by a chief judge to change his Jewish surname if he wishes to be promoted within the judiciary. Ignatz, his brother, and his cousin Valerie all happily change their last name to Sors - a "more Hungarian" name.

This story follows a young student, who is orphaned as she grows to adulthood in the shadow of the 1956 Hungarian uprising. Coming from the Communist intelligentsia, she sees her friends and family react differently. Her lover, a married factory manager, supports the patriots and later assists fellow workers in staging a strike. Meanwhile her sister and others express anger at being forced from their homes during the revolution and continue to express a hatred for the rebels afterwards. But in the end they realize that for all people, real life is not possible after the revolt and its brutal suppression by the Soviets and their collaborators.
