Au théâtre, Marietta Canty joue notamment entre 1929 et 1940 à Broadway (New York), où elle débute dans une revue, suivie de quatre pièces. Mentionnons Co-respondent Unknown de Mildred Harris et Harold Goldman en 1936, avec Ilka Chase et James Rennie.

Au cinéma, elle contribue à quarante films américains à partir de 1940, dont Les Écumeurs de Ray Enright (1942, avec Marlène Dietrich, Randolph Scott et John Wayne), Les Nuits ensorcelées de Mitchell Leisen (1944, avec Ginger Rogers et Ray Milland) et Le Père de la mariée (1950, avec Spencer Tracy, Joan Bennett et Elizabeth Taylor).

Behind the opening credits, the film opens on a suburban Los Angeles street with teenager Jim Stark (Dean) drunkenly lying down on a sidewalk. He is arrested and taken to the juvenile division of the police station for "plain drunkenness".
