Marino Girolami (Rome, 1 February 1914 – 20 February 1994) was an Italian film director who gained a cult following for his horror movies like Zombie Holocaust. He was the father of the Italian film maker Enzo G. Castellari and the actor Ennio Girolami.
Il obtient quelques rôles de figuration dans les années 1940 et travaille notamment comme assistant pour Mario Soldati, Renato Castellani et John Brahm. Il se fait remarquer en participant à l’écriture du scénario du film Campo de' fiori de Mario Bonnard.
Il passe à la réalisation en 1949 avec le film La strada buia qu’il co-réalise avec Sidney Salkow et qui est une adaptation du roman Dark Road de la romancière Doris Miles Disney. Il réalise et scénarise au cours de sa carrière plus de quatre-vingt films dans des genres variés allant de la classique comédie à l'italienne aux sombres giallo et néo-polar.
Il a également utilisé de nombreux pseudonymes, comme Franco Martinelli ou Frank Martin pour sortir des comédies érotiques et des giallo sur la fin de sa carrière. Sous le pseudonyme de Martinelli, il signe également le néo-polar Rome violente avec Maurizio Merli dans le rôle du commissaire Betti, avant de reprendre le nom de Girolami pour Opération jaguar (Italia a mano armata), le troisième et dernier film de la trilogie.
Il se retire en 1982 et décède en 1994 à Naples à l’âge de 80 ans.

Biography
Il étudie la médecine puis arrête ses études pour pratiquer la boxe. Il est d’abord retenu pour les Jeux olympiques d'été de 1936 mais est écarté au dernier moment pour raison médicale. Il arrête le sport et fréquente alors le Centro sperimentale di cinematografia de Rome.Il obtient quelques rôles de figuration dans les années 1940 et travaille notamment comme assistant pour Mario Soldati, Renato Castellani et John Brahm. Il se fait remarquer en participant à l’écriture du scénario du film Campo de' fiori de Mario Bonnard.

L'action du film se déroule à la fin du XVI siècle entre les Abruzzes et Rome. Le comte romain Francesco Cenci, un homme dissolu et violent, est condamné pour dettes à sept mois d'exil à passer dans une lointaine forteresse des Abruzzes. Véritable tyran, il exige que les membres de sa famille l'accompagnent, ce qui est particulièrement douloureux pour sa fille Béatrice, qui est contrainte de quitter son petit ami pour suivre son père. Soumise aux humiliations les plus cruelles de son père , elle demande l'aide de son petit ami qui décide de la libérer et arrive à la forteresse avec l'intention de l'enlever. Le plan échoue et le jeune homme reste coincé dans le château. Le lendemain matin, le corps du comte Cenci est retrouvé dans un ravin, sous la fenêtre de sa chambre. Accident ou crime ? Le processus d'enquête commence alors que les soupçons se concentrent sur les membres de la famille. Béatrice étant la seule à s'être opposée à l'autorité de son père est estimée coupable et lors du procès est condamnée avec son petit ami à la décapitation. Quand l'innocence de Béatrice est prouvée, la sentence a déjà été exécutée.
