Mary Maguire (22 February 1919 – 18 May 1974) was an Australian-born actress who briefly became a Hollywood and British film star in the late 1930s.

Biography

Elle est née Hélène Teresa Maguire à Melbourne en Australie son père Michael "Mickey" Maguire est footballeur, propriétaire des chevaux de course, propriétaire d'un hôtel et ancien boxeur et Mary Jane Maguire (née Carroll). Elle est la deuxième des cinq sœurs. Elle a grandi à Melbourne et à Brisbane, son père gérant le célèbre "Bull and Mouth Hotel" à Bourke Street, Melbourne et plus tard l'hôtel Bellevue à Brisbane. À Melbourne, elle a fréquenté l'Académie de Marie Immaculée à Fitzroy. Elle a débuté au cinéma à l'âge de 16 ans.

Elle et sa famille déménagent à Hollywood en septembre 1936. Un autre australien John Farrow lui organise une entrevue avec un directeur de casting qui lui a fait signé un contrat avec Warner Bros. Mary a fait ses débuts aux États-Unis dans le film B That Man's Here Again avec le comédien Hugh Herbert, suivi de Confession de Kay Francis et Ian Hunter, de l'île d'Alcatraz avec Ann Sheridan et John Litel et Sergeant Murphy avec Ronald Reagan.

Elle déménage à Londres en 1939 pour se marier. Son fils, Michael Robert, est né en février 1941. En 1945, elle divorce. Elle a essayé de redémarrer sa carrière hollywoodienne à l'âge de 26 ans mais en vain. Elle se marie avec Philip Henry Legarra, un ingénieur américain.

Elle est décédée à Long Beach en Californie en 1974.

British Captain Bill Hamilton meets and is attracted to American fashion designer Ann Morgan in Paris during the Phoney War stage of hostilities. He also makes the acquaintance of Sydney-Chronicle reporter Butch. Later, he is assigned by MI5 to investigate Ann. The fashion house where she works is a center of German fifth columnists, headed by Van Der Stuyl and Madame Florien. MI5 suspects Ann herself is a spy, but Bill is certain she is innocent. Her friend, Count Raul De La Vague, however, has been gulled by Van Der Stuyl and Madame Florien into believing that they are working for Franco-German peace and cooperation against communism. The count is told to donate an ambulance to the French cause. A German spy conceals a message inside the door.

"In a European city in the year 1930," 17-year-old music student Lisa Koslov (Bryan) sees her mother off at the train station, and as she is leaving, is handed an envelope containing two tickets to a piano concert she suspects come from a well-dressed man she thinks may be stalking her. Her friend Hildegard persuades her to attend the concert and realizes the man is the pianist himself, the renowned Michael Michailow (Rathbone). On Lisa's behalf, Hidegard accepts Michailow's dinner invitation to Lisa when she has misgivings. There he suavely pleads his loneliness and begs to see her the next day. When she goes to her conservatory lessons instead, she discovers that he has lied to the professor to insinuate himself as her tutor. Michialow kisses Lisa, who despite awareness that the situation is unsavory, responds to the kiss.

In colonial Australia, James Morrison is a young teamster who has two friends, Long and Short.
