Martial (Daniel Auteuil) is discharged from a mental institution where he spent a few years due to a serious nervous breakdown. During his hospitalization, he ceases to speak with everyone, including his wife Régine (Thérèse Liotard), whom he had encouraged to find a new partner soon after entering the clinic. Upon his return, he finds his mother (Danielle Darrieux), a busy business woman who owns a supermarket chain. She's convinced that her son, who by now hardly talks to anyone after his experience, will be able to find himself again if tasked with some responbibilities. Soon enough, he's sent to Limoges on a business trip to check on one of their stores in the hope to reinvigorate its failing business. Once he arrives, Martial is faced with responsibilities he had never imagined, including dealing with the store's personnel. Due to his lack of people skills, this job is a difficult task. Meantime, as instructed by his mother, he checks on the accounting handled by the manager, Mr. Fonfrin (Jean-Pierre Marielle), and he soon realizes that the reason for the branch's close-to-failure status is that Fonfrin is padding the books. Due to his inability to take charge for anything in life, Martial fails to perform his duties and instead befriends the crooked manager, who invites the naive heir to join him and his wife (Dominique Lavanant) for dinner one night. He immediately falls in love with Francine (Sandrine Bonnaire), the maid, an eccentric young woman with whom he has a brief relationship. Martial unconditionally showers her with all kinds of gifts, as this is the first time in several years that he feels close to someone; it is a short episode that makes his dejected life momentarily look brighter. He lets his work fall behind for her but, unfortunately, the romance doesn't last long and, upon his return to Paris, he is deemed incompetent and re-admitted to the hospital.

Policeman Philippe Jordan works in Marseille. He intercepts the delivery of a shipload of heroin by jumping out of a helicopter onto a speedboat and throws all drugs into the sea. After François Leclercq seduces the young and rich Gilberte Beaumont-Liégard, she introduces him to her family. Through the budding relationship with her in-laws, Leclercq is able to assimilate into the local upper class of his hometown, Cornai. A friend of Gilberte's father, Raphaël Di Massa hires him as manager of his new nightclub, "Number One". The oblivious parvenu Leclercq eventually discovers that "Number One" is actually a cover-up for Raphaël Di Massa's illegal drug trade. Following a dispute between Di Massa and Leclercq, the gun of the latter is stolen and used in the murder of a local football star. An orchestrated miscarriage of justice puts Leclercq in prison, despite his innocence. Seven years later, he returns to Cornai and discovers that it wasn't Di Massa, but Gilberte's father Jean-Baptiste Beaumont-Liégard who ran the drug operation during Leclercq's employment. In an act of retaliation, Leclercq turns Beaumont-Liégard's accomplices against him. As Jean-Baptiste Beaumont-Liégard is executed, Leclercq leaves the city satisfied with his revenge.

Cependant, il doit composer avec Marie-Charlotte Pontalec, déléguée permanente d'assistance post-pénale nommée par le juge d'application des peines. Victor et Marie-Charlotte ne tardent pas à éprouver une attirance réciproque, ce qui n'empêche pas Victor de chercher, à l'instigation de son oncle Camille, son père spirituel, à profiter de sa proximité avec Marie-Charlotte pour dérober un triptyque signé du Greco, après l'avoir vu au musée de Senlis, dont le père de Marie-Charlotte est conservateur. Mais la jeune femme finira par découvrir la vérité et le plus filou ne sera pas forcément celui auquel on pense de prime abord.
