La veuve Olga Petrovna entreprend un long voyage alors que l'Empire russe s'écroule. En pleine révolution d’Octobre, il lui est impossible de rejoindre sa fille Maria. Elle n'a pas pu avoir de ses nouvelles par sa nourrice. Elle rencontre par hasard Alexander Repin, une connaissance de son vieil ami et soupirant Sergei Smirnov. Repin accepte de l'aider, d'autant qu'il est tombé amoureux d'Olga. Tous deux tentent de s'échapper avec l'aide d'un prêtre. Mais Alexandre est arrêté tandis qu'Olga reste libre, car un pope l'a fait passer pour sa nièce. Alexander et Sergei se retrouvent dans la prison. Mais ce dernier se révèle vite être un traître. Honteux, Sergei aide finalement son ami à s'évader en prétendant l'avoir exécuté et jeté son corps dans le fleuve. The famous artist Harry Peters works on his new vaudeville act at the "Tivoli" music hall. He is assisted by Hella Stoll, who is his foster daughter since her parents, friends of Harry, died years ago. At the premiere of his new act, Harry surprisingly meets his old friend Franz Hofer from Vienna, an agent who also knew Hella as a child. He recognizes immediately that the little girl from the past has turned into a pretty young lady who is deeply in love with her foster father. Harry himself seems to be quite unaware of that. Instead, he finds himself stalked by beautiful Vera Leander, who follows him everywhere. After much hesitation, Harry is so trapped by her that he not only disregards his job, but also neglects Hella. But after a nearly fatal accident during a dangerous showact, he comes to his senses again and wants to return to Hella. When he recognizes that she has disappeared from the music hall, he suspects she has run away with a magician called Morelli. Furiously, he starts looking for them. He finally finds Morelli backstage, just dyeing his hair. To Harry's surprise, the magician turns out to be a certain Baraloff, the business manager of circus Stoll, the travelling circus that belonged to Hella's parents. He had at that time run away after stealing all the money, and the following alarmus and excursions had finally led to the fatal accident of Hella's parents. Now he can be arrested at last. Harry hands him over to the police and goes on looking for his foster daughter. Finally, he finds her at Hofer's flat, where they talk things out and in the end become a couple.

Le capitaine Michael von Prack, un pilote casse-cou de la Première Guerre mondiale, est prisonnier de guerre des Anglais en Asie mineure. Il s'échappe avec un avion anglais jusqu'en Prusse orientale, toujours en guerre. Dans un bar, il rencontre le capitaine Eckau, qui veut monter un corps franc contre les Russes, et le rejoint. Dans le même temps, il rencontre la jolie Russe Vera Ivanovna. Elle le confond d'abord avec son cousin, le général russe Alexeï Alexandrovich von Prack, qui lui ressemble beaucoup et dont elle est amoureuse. Ce dernier mène la troupe contre laquelle se bat le corps franc. Sur le chemin vers le lieu du combat, Michael revoit Vera, qui est aussi une espionne russe. Bien qu'elle se soit rendu compte de sa confusion, elle passe une nuit d'amour avec Michael, avant de revenir au quartier général russe. Quand Alexeï apprend cette liaison, il jure la mort de Michael, qu'il déteste depuis l'enfance, et tend un piège au corps franc. Il met en duel Michael. Alexeï est tué, Michael gravement blessé. Comme ils ont délaissé leurs uniformes, les Russes ramènent Michael à leur quartier général. Alors que Vera reconnaît Michael, ce dernier a pris des renseignements qui lui permettent de donner une meilleure position au corps franc. Vera hésite entre l'amour et le patriotisme. Elle choisit le patriotisme et va voir le commissaire russe. Avant de pouvoir être arrêté, Michael s'enfuit. Le corps franc attaque les Russes et prend leur quartier général. Vera meurt sous les décombres, Michael est tué durant les combats.

In 1912, the Austrian secret service identifies Marcella Galdi, an Italian noblewoman who is visiting Vienna, as an Italian spy. To avoid diplomatic confusions, she is kidnapped while dancing with the Austrian General Staff officer Michael von Hombergk at a ball at the famous hotel Sacher in Vienna, and sent back to Italy. Shortly afterwards, a secret plan of an Austrian fortress appears in Hombergks office desk, and as he himself is unable to explain this, the secret service urges him to commit suicide, but instead he manages to escape from Vienna.

During World War I, young Ellen Lange runs away from her boarding school in Hamburg, because she cannot stand its strict rules any longer, and escapes to her brother Rolf, who lives in Kiel. Rolf, a vice-helmsman by profession, is not too enthusiastic about Ellen's arrival, because he has to go to England in secret orders. So he tries to convince her to go back to her boarding school, and when they both separate at the station, he is convinced that she will do so. But Ellen is unwilling to give up her new freedom again, so she takes another train to Berlin instead. During the journey, she meets a young girl that promises to help her find a job in Berlin. She also provides Ellen with the address of "Aunt Jenny", a dubios lady that finally gets her a job in a music store. After her three months of probation, Mr. Hansen, her boss, orders Ellen to bring a precious violin to Copenhagen. He also provides her with a false passport, as Ellen does not have any identity papers.
