Maxwell Reed (2 April 1919 – 16 August 1974) was a Northern Irish actor who became a matinee idol in several British films during the 1940s and 1950s. His early years included work as a merchant seaman and minor stage experience in Ireland and London, before being auditioned by Rank and joining 'The Company of Youth’ at the age of 27.
Reed moved to the U.S. in the late 1950s and portrayed the title role in the 1950s television series Captain David Grief, which was based on short stories by Jack London. He also made three films in the U.S. and appeared as a guest star in television series such as Bonanza, Perry Mason and Daniel Boone.
He was the first husband of actress Joan Collins, whom he allegedly raped, and married on 24 May 1952. The marriage ended in divorce in 1956.
He died from cancer, aged 55, in London.

The film retells the story of the Trojan War, albeit with some major changes from the Iliad's storyline: Paris of Troy (Jacques Sernas) sails to Sparta to secure a peace treaty between the two powerful city-states. His ship is forced to return to Troy in a storm after he has been swept overboard on the shore of Sparta. Paris is found by Helen, Queen of Sparta (Rossana Podestà), with whom he falls in love. He goes to the palace where he finds Helen's husband, King Menelaus (Niall MacGinnis), Agamemnon (Robert Douglas), Odysseus (Torin Thatcher), Achilles (Stanley Baker) and many other Greek kings debating whether to go to war with Troy. Menelaus, who is denied by Helen, sees that his wife and Paris are in love and, pretending friendship, plots Paris' death.

The year is 1800, and Britain and France have been at war since 1798, in what later was to be known as the War of the Second Coalition. Gilliatt, a fisherman-turned-smuggler on Guernsey, agrees to transport a beautiful woman, Drouchette, to the French coast. She tells him she hopes to rescue her brother from a French prison. Gilliatt finds himself falling in love and so feels betrayed when he later learns that Drouchette is a countess helping Napoleon plan an invasion of Britain. In reality, however, Drouchette is a British agent working to thwart this invasion. When Gilliatt learns this, he returns to France to rescue her, just as her true purpose has been discovered by the French.

The film opens with ruthless killer The Dark Man (Maxwell Reed) murdering Mostyn, a petty criminal, at a farm house in a lonely wood. He shoots the taxi driver who drove him to Mostyn’s farm house, as he would be able to identify the Dark Man. But this murder is witnessed by a passerby: Molly (Natasha Parry), a young actress. The Dark Man now seeks to kill her as well. The police are called, and Inspector Viner (Edward Underdown) is put on the case. He soon develops romantic feelings for Molly. An engineer Christopher Pelly (Maxwell Reed), loses his eyesight in an accident. He goes to London to have an eye operation. There he wants to go to his friends house but the taxi driver dropped him at the wrong house in Kensington. In the house three men had murdered a person with a knife and the corpse was lying on the floor. Pelly doesn't know that he is in the wrong house, and seeing that he is blind, the three murderers don't kill him. Pelly reported the incident to the police but the police were unable to find the dead body. When Pelly regains his eyesight after the operation he decides to solve the murder mystery.

After the Second World War, some British soldiers are guarding a theatre in Germany containing various refugees and prisoners trying to work out what to do with them.
