Mehboob Khan (1907 – 28 May 1964) was a pioneer, producer-director of Hindi cinema, best known for directing the social epic Mother India (1957), which won the Filmfare Awards for Best Film and Best Director and was a nominee for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. He set up his production company, Mehboob Productions, and later a film studio, the Mehboob Studios in Bandra, Mumbai in 1954.

Set in the Ottoman Empire it deals with the Caesar’s (Pande) army and their skirmishes with the local Muslim rulers. The Sultan’s (Asooji) son Ziyad (Kumar) is arrested by the Roman army. The Roman princess Rahil falls in love with him. A Muslim maid Leela (Sitara Devi) and the princess help him escape. What follows are long chase scenes and fights which ultimately lead to success for Ziyad and his people.

Malti (Sabita Devi) is the daughter of a wealthy mill-owner Jagmohandas (Asooji), who is an evil, corrupt man. She meets a young man Vinod (Jal Merchant) in College. They both fall in love and decide to get married. However, Vinod's father is humiliated by Jagmohandas and he commits suicide. An angry Vinod decides to take revenge by marrying Malti and putting her through mental and physical abuse. An old friend of Malti's, Sudhakar (Balaram), loves her from college days and watches the treatment Malti suffers through her husband but is unable to do anything. Vinod takes to drinking and bringing nautch girls home. Malti suggests Sudhakar get married to Nalini (Swaroop Rani) who is ultra-mod but Malti tries to help her turn traditional.

An evil minister wants to kill the young boy Chandrahasa who escapes the minister’s killers. Several years later the minister finds Chandrahasa and sends him as a messenger to the king with a letter. The letter asks the king to poison the messenger. On the way a young princess finds him sleeping and reads the letter. She rewords the letter and changes Vish (poison) to Vishya, which is her name. The king on receiving the letter gets Chandrahasa married to the princess.

A royal Indian family consists of the Emperor Maharaj (Murad), his brother Shamsher Singh (Premnath) and sister Rajshree (Nadira). Neena (Nargis) is the spoiled daughter of a rich businessman (Murad). One day while horseriding she loses control of her horse and is rescued by a young man named Dilip (Dilip Kumar). Dilip instantly takes a liking to her and starts to frequently visit her house where he entertains her with his singing along with Neena's friend Sheela (Cukoo). Nina's father dislikes this; he tries to make her realise that spending so much time with Dilip is not wise, as Dilip might misconstrue their friendship as love. On the day of Sheela's birthday party, Dilip realises he has fallen in love with Neena and tries to tell her. However, tragedy strikes on the same day when Neena's father dies of a heart attack, leaving Nina devastated. Dilip comforts her and Neena gives him the responsibility of looking after her father's business and staying in a spare room at her home.

Prakash and his older sister (Naseem Banu) live a poor life, and are unable to pay their rent. Laatsaab (Prem Adib) is from a rich family, but having left home lives as a poor homeless man. He tries to help the brother and sister get something to eat. He ventures out during curfew time and is caught by the police but is able to hand the food to the brother and sister. The sister develops a soft spot for Laat Saheb. However the neighbours insist that she be put out of her house as is having a clandestine affair with Latt Saheb. When Prakash dies due to an accident, his sister thinks of moving from their rented accommodation. Travelling by train she again meets up with Laatsaheb, who is going to see his unwell mother. During the journey he lets her know that he loves her, much to her joy. The train they are in meets with an accident and she is presumed dead. She ends up in a hospital where she meets Professor Nath (Surendra) who takes her home as she has lost her memory. He renames her Kamini and blocks any means of her regaining her memory since he's fallen in love with her, and does not want to lose her. Laatsaheb re-enters her life and tries to help her remember her past. Finally she regains her memory and goes off with Lattsaheb, leaving the Professor behind.

Lucknow medical student Yusuf has fallen in love with Najma, the daughter of his wealthy neighbor, after seeing her only once. Encouraged by his friend Bedil, he decides to pursue her. Najma thinks he is too forward and tries to punish him by putting salt in his food at her family's Eid celebration, but accidentally serves it to his father Dr. Khan instead. Najma then falls in love with Yusuf, meeting him secretly in the garden. Their romance is interrupted when Dr. Khan announces that he has betrothed his son to his cousin Raziya. Although Yusuf initially refuses to marry Raziya because she is an uneducated village girl and he loves Najma, Najma convinces him to marry Raziya to preserve his family's honor. Heartbroken, they both marry other people; Yusuf marries Raziya and Najma weds the wealthy Mukarram Nawab. Raziya finds out about Yusuf's hidden love and becomes very jealous. Meanwhile, Yusuf sinks into depression and Najma becomes ill with worry over him. Mukarram overhears Raziya jealously berating Najma over her love for Yusuf and resolves to kill him. But Mukarram has a serious accident and Yusuf is the only one who can save his life. Yusuf saves Mukarra's life and assures him and Raziya that he does not wish to take Najma away. Giving up each other forever, Yusuf and Najma part.
